    In a bid to protect their customers against any fraudulent activity, hacking, phishing, etc., State Bank of India has rolled out its very own Virtual Card. Also known as an Electronic Card or e-card, the virtual card is a limit debit card and is valid for a period of 48 hours or till the transaction comes to a close. The Virtual Card can be used to be make transactions online on e-commerce websites - basically at all merchants accepting Visa or Mastercards.

    • The e-card adds another layer of security when making transactions online. It basically hides the primary card and account details from the merchant, reducing the chances of duplication or any fraudulent activity.

    • Customers can also create a virtual card after the OTP (One-time password) is sent to their registered mobile numbers - this too enhances security of their card.
    • Customers can make payments through their State Bank of India net banking account.

    • If the customer does not use the amount credited to the Virtual Card, the money will be refunded to the customer’s account.

    Steps to create a Virtual Card

    For State Bank of India customers that wish to create a Virtual Card to make transactions, they can follow the steps mentioned below.

    • Visit the State Bank of India Internet Banking page.
    • Login using your username and password.
    • Click on the “e-card” tab on the top bar.
    • Once you have done that, click on “generate virtual card’.
    • Now, select the account you wish to transfer money to the Virtual Card.
    • Enter the amount you wish to transfer to the Virtual Card - the minimum is Rs.100 and the maximum is Rs.50,000.
    • Agree to the terms and conditions by clicking on the tick box.
    • Click on “Generate”.
    • Once you have clicked on “Generate” you will have to verify the cardholder name, debit card account number and the Virtual Card limit. Click on “back” if there is any correction to be made.
    • As soon as this is done, State Bank of India will send an OTP to your registered mobile number.
    • Enter the OTP and click on “confirm”.
    • Once that is done, the details of the Virtual debit card will be displayed on the screen - name of the account holder, Virtual debit card number, limit of the e-card, CVV and the expiry date of the card.
    • One can now use the Virtual Card to make e-commerce transactions.

    Steps to check State Bank of India Virtual Card Details

    Since there is no limit to how many Virtual Cards a customer can create in a day, the net banking account of the customer has the option of viewing the details of the Virtual debit card. By doing this, customers will know exactly the credit limit on the card and know exactly when the card will expire or if it has expired already. To check the status of your Virtual debit card, follow the steps mentioned below.

    • Visit the SBI net banking website.
    • Enter your SBI net banking username and password.
    • Click on the e-card tab on the top bar of the screen.
    • Next, click on State Bank Virtual Card.
    • Click on Virtual Card details.
    • The screen will then display the card number, name of the card holder, date of issue, expiry date of the card, merchant name, limit amount, status of the card - whether it has been used or not - and the source account number.

    Steps to Cancel State Bank of India Virtual Card

    If for some reason a customer wishes to cancel the Virtual Card, he/she can follow the steps mentioned below.

    • Visit the SBI net banking website.
    • Enter your SBI net banking username and password.
    • Click on the e-card tab on the top bar of the screen.
    • Next, click on State Bank Virtual Card.
    • Next, click on cancel Virtual Card.
    • Select the Virtual card you wish to cancel and click on the “cancel” button.
    • Verify if this virtual card is what you really want to cancel, if so, click on “ok”.
    • A confirmation message will be displayed on the screen that the virtual card has been cancelled. If there is any residual amount left in the Virtual Card, it will be credited to the account of the customer within an hour from cancellation of the card.
