Axis Bank to Launch its Mobile Wallet Soon
One of India’s premier private sector banks, Axis Bank, is taking cue from the incrementing popularity of such platforms as Paytm, MobiKwik and Oxigen to launch its own m-wallet offering. The aptly named m-wallets are the online equivalent of an actual wallet and is helpful in conducting online financial transactions without directly using the credit/debit card ecosystem. When prompted, Mr. Jairam Sridharan, president and head retail lending and payments at Axis Bank conceded that they aren’t sure if this will be a lasting phenomenon or a short-lived fad. However, a reputable banking entity such as Axis Bank cannot hold back when many of its competitors are in the throes of launching their own m-wallets. This, plus the fact that these online wallet transactions accounted for Rs.8,180 crores in business through the 2014-15 fiscal is ample motivation for Axis Bank to jump, enthusiastically, into the bandwagon.
