The Transport Department of Gujarat functions as per the provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. It provides citizen-friendly services related to transport, driver and vehicle documentation, and makes sure that the rules formed under the CMV are enforced properly. The department offers services such as vehicle registration and related procedures, issue of driving permits and licenses, bike insurance, and collection of road taxes. It also contributes to the revenue of the state. Following are some of the guidelines and documentation required for registration of vehicles in Gujarat.

Importance of Gujarat Vehicle Registration Details

The CMV Act prohibits the use of an unregistered vehicle in any public place in India. Thus, a vehicle owner must get their vehicle registered in order to avoid any legal trouble while using their vehicle. They must also renew their vehicle registration once the validity of the same expires.

Documents Required For Gujarat Vehicle Registration Process

For vehicle registration in Gujarat, an application has to be made in Form 20 and all the necessary documents must be furnished. The application must be made within 7 days from the date of purchase along with the documents mentioned below:

  • Application in CMV Form No.20
  • CMV Form No.21-Vehicle Sales Certificate
  • Valid insurance certificate.
  • Form 22 provided by vehicle Dealer
  • Address proof of the vehicle owner
  • Passport sized photos
  • Temporary registration certificate (if any)
  • Applicable fee as per Rule 81, CMV Act
  • Form ‘A’ under Taxation Act of 1997.
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate
  • Custom clearance certificate (For imported vehicles)
  • Vehicle to be produced for physical inspection

Renewal of Vehicle Registration Certificate

A vehicle needs to be registered after it completes 15 years from the first registration. The registering authority assesses the roadworthiness of the vehicle and renew the RC if they are satisfied with the condition of the vehicle. The application needs to be made along with the following documents:

  • CMV Form No. 25
  • Vehicle Registration certificate
  • Vehicle Insurance document
  • Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate
  • Road tax receipt
  • Address proof of vehicle owner
  • Vehicle needs to be produced for inspection

Application For Duplicate Vehicle Registration Certificate

In case the original RC of the vehicle is lost, a vehicle owner can apply for a duplicate RC. To do the same, they must make an application in Form No.26 and submit the following documents along with it.

  • Form No. 26
  • Vehicle Insurance document
  • Fees payment receipt
  • Police FIR copy
  • Affidavit by the vehicle owner stating that the vehicle RC is misplaced or lost

Transfer of Vehicle Ownership

When selling the vehicle or transferring its possession to another person, the Registration Certificate needs to be legally transferred to the other person. Following is the list of documents needed for the purpose.

  • Duly filled Form 29 and Form 30
  • Vehicle Registration Certificate
  • Vehicle Insurance document
  • No Objection Certificate (if the vehicle is registered in another state)
  • Passport sized photograph of vehicle seller and purchaser
  • Applicable fees as per rule 81
  • Tax clearance certificate

In case of transfer of vehicle ownership due to inheritance after the death of the vehicle owner, following documents are required to be submitted:

  • Form No. 31
  • Death certificate of vehicle owner
  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Passport sized photographs
  • Insurance certificate
  • Proof of succession

Recording or Cancellation of Hypothecation

If a vehicle has been purchased on credit, the details of hypothecation must be entered in the RC book. Once the loan is paid off in full by the vehicle owner, the hypothecation can be removed from the RC book.

  • For recording hypothecation in vehicle RC, an application has to be made in Form 34
  • For cancellation of hypothecation, an application can be made in Form 35
  • Other documents required: Registration certificate, Pollution Under Control Certificate, Vehicle Insurance, print of chassis
  • Fee: Rs.100

Change of Address in Vehicle RC

In case there is a change in the residential address of the vehicle owner, the same should be recorded in the RC. The following documents are to be submitted at the RTO for the purpose:

  • Application in Form 33
  • Print of chassis
  • No Objection Certificate from the financer (if the vehicle has been purchased on loan)
  • Vehicle Registration Certificate
  • Vehicle Insurance document
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate
  • Proof of address
  • Application fee; Rs.20
