How to Apply for Heavy Vehicle Licence

In India, to legally drive on the road, you need a driving licence. There is a set procedure which you need to follow to acquire a driving licence. You also need to check in which category your vehicle falls into before making an application.

The list of vehicle categories is as follows:

Which vehicles are HGMV?

Heavy Goods Motor Vehicle (HGMV) are basically trucks, lorries, garbage haulers, etc. These vehicles are heavy-duty and are commercially used in most cases. The skillset needed to drive these vehicles vary from that required for regular vehicles. Driving these vehicles requires more efficiency as it involves high risk when on road.

Eligibility criteria for HGMV

  • The minimum required age to apply for this licence is 20 years.
  • The applicant should have sound mental and physical health.
  • The applicant should complete his training from government authorised or affiliated motor training school.
  • The applicant should have a valid learner's licence.

Documents required while applying for a HGMV driving licence

  • Residential proof: Ration card, electricity bill etc.
  • Identity proof: Aadhaar card, PAN card, etc.
  • Age proof: 10th passing certificate, birth certificate, etc.
  • Duly signed application form.

Steps to Apply for a HGMV Driving Licence Online

  • Step 1: Visit parivahan.gov
  • Step 2: Keep the cursor on ‘Online Services’ and select ‘Driving Licence Related Services’.
  • Step 3: Select the state in which you wish to apply from the drop-down menu.
  • Step 4: Click on ‘Apply for Driving Licence’.
  • Step 5: Click on ‘Continue’.
  • Step 6: Fill your "Learning License Number" & "Date of Birth" to proceed further.
  • Step 7: Enter details in application form and add for which category you need licence.
  • Step 8: Click on ‘Next’.
  • Step 9: Visit the RTO as per schedule.

Steps to Apply for a HGMV Driving Licence Offline

If you wish to apply offline for an HGMV driving licence, you can visit the nearest RTO office along with necessary documents and make an offline application. The concerned officer will guide you through the procedure after checking all your documents.

Once you pay the fees for application, you will get an acknowledgement receipt with application number mentioned. You will soon be notified with driving test date and time.
