How to Register a Vehicle in Gujarat RTO

Like every other state, under the Motor Vehicle act of 1988, every vehicle that is functional publically has to be first registered in the specific RTO in the state. In Gujarat, 19 RTO (Regional Transport Offices) have been established for the registration of a vehicle. The documents required vary on the situation of the owner of the vehicle.

Procedure and documents required for registration in Gujarat RTO

  • Registration of a new vehicle: Form 20 can be downloaded from the website http://rtogujarat.gov.in and filled with the appropriate details. After the form is filled, it is to be submitted to the website of the transport department. A print out of the filled Form 20 along with other necessary documents has to be submitted by the owner of the vehicle to the RTO in his or her area of residence. The owner can get the inspection of the vehicle done by an authorised dealer or the vehicle can directly be produced at the RTO office for examination. After the verification of the documents submitted along with Form 20 is complete, the vehicle is assigned a random registration number. The smart R.C. book will be sent to the owner through speed post on the address mentioned in the registration form.

Many vehicle owners prefer a number of their own choice rather than the computer generated registration number. When a new series for registration numbers is opened in an RTO, allocation is made via an auction. After the auction is complete, the registration numbers that have not been assigned to anyone are sold for a fee. For two-wheelers, the cost is Rs.1,000 and for four-wheelers, the cost is Rs.5,000.
