With increasing digitisation, the risk of identity theft and misuse of data has also increased. It is extremely essential to protect sensitive information like Aadhaar number to safeguard yourself from any fraudulent activities.
In order to combat this issue, the Government of India introduced ‘Masked Aadhaar’. This version of Aadhaar has enhanced privacy and reduces the risk of identity theft and misuse while sharing Aadhaar for verification purposes. Read on to know more about it.
A masked Aadhaar is a more secure version of your original Aadhaar card. In this, the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number are concealed, and only the last four digits remain visible. For example, if your Aadhaar number is 1800 7891 1234, then it will appear like XXXX-XXXX-1234.
Sharing masked Aadhaar for verification purposes helps you keep your Aadhaar number confidential, and this lowers the risk of data misuse.
Maksked Aadhaar card should be used when you are required to verify your identity without disclosing the entire Aadhaar number. Some of the scenarios where masked Aadhaar can be used are as follows:
Online services: You can use a masked Aadhaar when you are using websites or digital services that ask for identity proof. If you use a masked Aadhaar, you can share your Aadhaar and verify your identity, but your Aadhaar number is concealed.
KYC verification: At times, you have to complete the KYC process for banks or telecom companies when buying SIM card, and other institutions may ask for identity proof for KYC. In such cases, a masked Aadhaar is accepted, especially for offline verification. It is advisable to confirm with the bank or organisation about their specific requirements.
Digital platforms: When you are registering on mobile apps, shopping websites, or other online platforms that require identity verification, you can use a masked Aadhaar to maintain your privacy and protect yourself from any fraudulent activities.
