Immediate Payment Service, commonly known as IMPS, is an instant interbank electronic fund transfer facility that is used by a number of banks across the country. The service is extremely handy for customers to make cashless transfers to their beneficiaries.
Using IMPS requires an MMID and mobile number, or the bank account number and the IFSC code. It works just like a NEFT transfer except that the payment is done immediately, regardless of bank timings and holidays.
Customers can use this service to transfer funds 24x7 through mobile banking and internet banking. SBI also makes it possible for customers to transfer funds using USSD or SMS banking.
Customers who wish to use the IMPS can benefit from the funds being transferred almost immediately on a real-time basis. In case of emergencies, and payments that need to be made immediately, IMPS is the best option as there are no delays. Once the transfer is successful, the bank will send a confirmation message. For the recipient, their bank will also send a confirmation to the beneficiary notifying them that their savings account has been credited with the amount.
Anyone with a bank account at State Bank of India is eligible to use the IMPS facility. The facility to send money using IMPS is available only for mobile banking and internet banking customers. Although, anyone with an SBI account can receive funds through IMPS. In order to receive funds, customers need to register their mobile number with SBI. A 7-digit MMID will be issued which has to be used in order to receive funds. You need to complete a few basic steps before you can send funds through IMPS:

Person to Account (IFSC mode) - IFSC stands for the Indian Financial System Code. Basically, it is an alphanumeric code which is used to identify the bank and the bank branch to which the fund transfer needs to be credited. To make an IMPS transfer using this mode, you need the following information:
Person to Person (MMID mode) - MMID stands for Mobile Money Identification Number. It consists of 7 digits and is a unique number linked to a particular bank account. The first four digits represent a unique code to identify the bank. An MMID can be generated through mobile banking, internet banking, or at the bank branch. To make an IMPS transfer using the MMID mode, you need the following information:
By using the IMPS facility provided by SBI, customers can transfer money to other customers of SBI. They can also make fund transfers to any bank account of another bank. Customers can also use IMPS to make payments to merchants by using the merchant's MMID. IMPS is an easy way to go cashless and make payments easily.
When you register for mobile banking, you will receive a 7-digit MMID. This will be applicable to the primary account. If you have other bank accounts with SBI and need MMIDs for those, you will need to visit the bank branch, fill up a form and apply for it. If your secondary accounts are enabled for mobile banking, then you can generate MMIDs by choosing "IMPS" and then "Generate MMID".
If you need to register for mobile banking, you need to visit an SBI ATM and generate an MMID.
You can also register at an SBI branch.
If you have forgotten your MMID, you can get a new one using any of these methods:
You can add and approve only one payee in one calendar day. The payee will be activated within 4 hours if you made the approval between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. (IST). Payees added after this slot will be activated the next day post 8:00 a.m.
If you have entered wrong details, most likely the transaction will be declined if the mobile number and MMID don't match. If you used an account number and IFSC, the money could get credited to the wrong bank account which is hard to retrieve. Please ensure you enter the correct details while setting up a beneficiary. If you have made a transfer to the wrong account, you will have to contact customer care for guidance. If you haven't already made a transfer, you can delete the payee and add a new one with the correct details.
