A vast majority of motorcycle enthusiasts want their bike to look and sound like the Harley Davidsons, Suzuki Hayabusas, and the Yamaha R1s. To rebuild the bike in their own image, they resort to various forms of modification.

While some people don’t go through with it for reasons of their own, others expend all their resources to make it happen. If you are one of those who is hell bent on modifying your two wheeler, pause for a few minutes and read through this page because modifications can have an impact on the bike’s existing insurance policy . Besides, certain modifications can even void your policy. In this page you will learn all about the impact of different alterations on your insurance.

    Performance Modification:

A performance modification is anything that enhances the performance of your two-wheeler with regards to its speed and handling. Usually, insurance companies have a rule wherein they void a policy if an individual goes through with an alteration that affects their bike’s performance. This is largely because insurers believe that when you enhance the speed or handling aspects of your bike, you are ceasing control of optimum engineering factors, putting yourself at risk.

They basically consider that a change in speed and handling will increase the odds of them having to pay for any accidents. In such cases, insurers either increase the premium or scrap the policy altogether to cut their risk after carefully evaluating all the factors involved.

    Security Modification:

A security modification is something that increases the security aspect of your vehicle, which could involve installing anti-theft devices. Such modifications reduce the risk of the insurer having to pay you as your vehicle has a slightly smaller chance of getting stolen. Once the risk reduces, you are more likely to get a lower premium offering.

    Aesthetic Modification:

Aesthetic modification is basically something that changes the visual appeal of a bike. Insurers increase the premiums in such cases because they believe a better looking bike runs a higher chance of getting stolen. One thing worth noting before going for such modification is that the actual value of the bike will remain the same irrespective of the money you pump into it. If you don’t mind paying a few extra bucks as premium by changing the appearance of your bike, you can go ahead with it.

A two-wheeler modification, while improving the overall appearance and performance of your bike, will also compromise its integrity. If you really want to go through with it, keep a tab on all the risks involved and make sure to work only with experienced individuals.
