According to rules and regulations in Delhi, one cannot choose their vehicle number. Earlier, vehicle sellers used to give customers a few options and they could pick any from the available options. Today, if you need a VIP number or odd/even number in New Delhi, there is a specific process to be followed.
When your two wheeler is registered with the RTO, your vehicle number will be randomly generated by an automated system. It can be odd or even relies on your luck. Fancy vehicle numbers were issued in the past too. But now, the whole process can be completed online. The bidding site remains open from Monday to Friday. The site does not work on Saturday and Sunday. When you access the e-auction website, do check all the necessary guidelines that you should be aware of.
The accompanying numbers have been assigned as special registration numbers, and the relating Minimum Reserve Price is specified below. A special/fancy vehicle number cannot be alloted below its minimum reserve price.
Class Registration Marks/ Minimum Base Cost of Numbers
- 0001 - Rs.5 lakh
- 0002 to 0009 - Rs.3 lakh
- 0010 to 0099, 0786, 1000, 1111, 7777 and 9999 - Rs.2 lakh
- 0100,0111,0200,0222,0300,0333,0400,0444,0500,0555, 0600, 0666, 0700, 0777, 0800, 0888, 0900, 0999, 2000, 2222, 3000, 3333, 4000, 4444, 5000, 5555, 6000, 6666, 7000, 8000, 8888, 9000, 0101, 0108, 1008, and 1313 - Rs.1 lakh.
- Any other series, which isn't specified in classification No. 01 to 04 above and is looked for by an individual as a special request – Rs.20,000
Step 1: Registration
If interested in the bidding for getting a special vehicle number, the bidder should register themselves on the site, and obtain their Unique Acknowledgment Number (UAN). The fee for e-auction is Rs.1000 which is to be paid online. This sum is non-refundable.
The registration window will be open for 3 days from the date of commencement of online auction. The bidding will continue for the next two day after the list of available numbers is out. The facility can be accessed on gazetted holidays too.
Time for registration: 6:00 AM (day 1) to 12:00 midnight (day 3)
Bidding: After 12 pm (day 3) to 05:00 PM (day 5)*
** The bidding time may get extended by a few minutes if if the numbers are still in offer. However, the time will be extended by maximum 30 minutes.
The candidate needs to deposit the minimum reserve cost for their preferred number in the form of a Demand Draft issued by any nationalised bank. The DD has to be issued in the name of "Chief of Transport, Government of NCT of Delhi". The Demand draft will be kept at Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC). If the bidder chooses more than one registration number for a specific number, at that point he needs to deposit the base cost of the base cost for the number which has a higher minimum base price.
Registration of the bidder will be endorsed by the Transport Department (DTIDC). On the receipt of DD, a payment confirmation slip will be provided by the DTIDC. You will promptly receive your UAN number through a text SMS after you pay a registration cost of Rs.1000 online.
Once you pay the registration fee online, you should submit the DD at the DTIDC office at the earliest. If you wish to bid for a class-5 number, you will be needed to submit a DD of Rs.20,000. You will also be needed to furnish few of the documents such as the residential address of the person on whose name the vehicle is registered.
The duplicate copy of the residential proof has to be attested by the individual and the original copy might also be required if the documents are presented on behalf of someone else. You may fill the draft details on the left hand side on the e-auction website. You may do the same by entering your UAN details of the demand draft. Once you submit your documents at the DTIDC, you will receive your username and password by SMS.
Step 2: Participate in Bidding
You have your username and the password now. Once the registration procedure is completed on the third day, the bidding will commence on the fourth day and proceed on the fifth day. The bidding will be performed after 12 pm (day 3) up to 5.00 pm (day 5) unless it is extended for a few more minutes.
Go to "Select mark of choice". You will see a list of available options. You may also add the number of your choice from the option placed in the bottom. The reserve cost will appear in front of the number. A single person can choose a maximum of 10 numbers. If the number you are looking for already appears in the list, it is most likely that it has been already selected by someone else. This will increase the possibility for the bidding. You may choose a maximum of 10 numbers from the list so that you have more options to choose from in case the price for your most preferred number is beyond your budget.

Step 3: Getting Allotment Letter
Once you have effectively completed the bidding and a number is assigned to you, you will get a confirmation SMS for the same. The last step is to obtain the confirmation letter which you need to handover to the vehicle dealer. The dealer will subsequently register your vehicle with the same number. You will be needed to visit the DTIDC office again to get this letter on any working days. You are given 5 working days after the sale to get this letter. In case you neglect to get this letter in 5 days, the number will be scratched off and no sum will be returned. The bidders who win are required to pay the balance as Demand Draft within 5 working days.
