A passport is an essential document for any individual who wishes to leave India and visit another country. When you apply for a passport and the officials approve your application and create a document for you, India Post will dispatch the same via Speed Post and it will be delivered to the applicantâ€™s current residential address.
Collection of Passport at the Regional Passport Office
Individuals who need their passports urgently can collect the document personally from the Regional Passport Office (RPO) where he / she applied for the same. However, if you wish to collect your passport from an RPO, you will have to furnish an application which states the reason why you need the document urgently. The application can be submitted to the official at the RPO, but the decision regarding the delivery of the document at the RPO will be taken by the concerned Regional Passport Officer.
What to do when the status appears as â€œDelivered / Dispatchedâ€ but you havenâ€™t yet received the passport?
The Tracking Utility feature available on India Postâ€™s Speed Post can be used to check your passportâ€™s delivery status. You can also get in touch with the nearest Speed Post center and confirm whether or not the status appearing on the website is correct. If the Speed Post officials cannot locate the consignment, or in case your passport consignment has been returned to the sender, you will have to get in touch with the concerned Regional Passport Office and they will assist you with the future course of action.
Collection of Passport from the Mailman
The applicant is requested to collect his / her passport personally from the mailman. However, if the applicant cannot collect the passport himself / herself for whatever reason, the mailman can decide whether or not he can hand the document over to one of the applicantâ€™s family members after verifying their ID proof. The mailman is at the liberty to return the passport to the issuing RPO in case the ID proof offered by the applicantâ€™s family member is not satisfactory.
In case the postal authorities return your passport to the issuing RPO because you were not available to collect it, you will have to get in touch with the concerned RPO and furnish an application stating the problem after which the authorities will dispatch the document again. A proof of your current residential address must also be sent along with the application in addition to any other additional proofs that the RPO may require.
What to do if your residential address changes when your passport application is still being processed?
Passports are usually delivered to the current residential address of the applicant as mentioned in the form when applying for a passport. In case your residential address has changed when your passport application is still being processed, you will have to furnish an application at the concerned RPO and have your current residential address updated. Make sure that you carry a document which serves as a proof of your new residential address, along with a request letter to update the address in your passport.
