Passport Office Hyderabad

The Regional Passport Office in Hyderabad was set up in the year 1976 by a directive from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) following the bifurcation from the passport office in Chennai. Originally operating out of a small office space in the heart of the city, the Regional Passport Office in Hyderabad moved to a new office space in Secunderabad.

The Regional Passport Office in Hyderabad is one of the busiest in the country, second only to the office in Mumbai. Due to the large number of applications being processed at the office as well as the growing scope of work being done, the RPO has grown nearly 10 fold in terms of workforce strength.

The Regional Passport Office in Hyderabad and its smaller counterparts namely the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK’s) processed over 5.88 lakh applications in 2017. The Regional Passport Office in Hyderabad (known as the RPO Hyderabad) is the central passport processing and application centre, with the Passport Seva Kendras (PSK’s), Passport Seva Laghu Kendras (PSLK’s) and other bodies subordinate to it. The Regional Passport Officer manages the day-to-day running of the RPO, with the PSK’s and PSLK’s reporting to his/her office.

The RPO in Hyderabad has a strength of over 100 employees working in different capacities. Staff members include the Regional Passport Officer, Deputy Passport Officer, Superintendent, and Passport Granting Officer among others.

Functions of the RPO

The RPO in Hyderabad performs the following activities and functions pertaining to passport services:

  • Processing and issuing of new and renewed passports.
  • Issuing of police clearance certificate/background verification for overseas travel to Indian citizens.
  • Maintenance of RPO personnel files and service book.

In addition to these, the Hyderabad RPO also handles other duties and activities as directed by the MEA from time to time.

The Hyderabad RPO’s website offers detailed information on the passport application process as well as other matters pertaining to overseas travel for Indian citizens. Guides and related information pertaining to applicants, governing bodies, issuers and media can be found on the website.

The website is updated regularly with notices issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), under directive from the Government of India. It is advisable for applicants to check the website for any update/change pertaining to overseas travel rules/norms.

Applying for a Passport

Applicants can visit the official website and submit their passport applications online. The fee for issuing a new passport/renewal is also to be paid online through the various options provided. Following this, the applicant has to choose an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra to submit their documents.

Certain walk-in categories like infants and senior citizens need not make an appointment but can submit their documents during morning hours. It is advisable to check if the PSK still accepts walk-in applicants. Verifying the time for walk-in applicants is also necessary.

Passport Application Process

The passport application process is described briefly below:

  • Application form: Applicants are required to fill out the application form (available on the official website) and submit the same online. Once the fee has been paid, an acknowledgement will be generated, which is to be submitted to the PSK.
  • Application processing: Once the applicant has submitted the acknowledgement and documents to the PSK, the police verification will be conducted. In the case of applicants who submit their Aadhaar details along with their documents, the police verification will be done after the passport is issued.
  • Passport issuance: On successfully clearing the police verification process, the passport will be sent by registered post to the address mentioned on the applicant’s form.
