  • Road Tax in Himachal Pradesh

    When you are buying a vehicle in any state, there are two prices that you must be aware of, one is the ex-showroom price and the other is the on-road price. On-road price in Himachal Pradesh (Capital City: Shimla) is nothing but the manufacturer price plus the cost of registration and taxes due to the central and state government and the cost of vehicle insurance. The taxes charged on the vehicles in Himachal Pradesh is based on the provisions of Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. It states the guidelines to calculate tax on the vehicles sold or registered in Himachal Pradesh.

    How is the Road Tax calculated in Himachal Pradesh?

    In India, the road tax is imposed by both the central as well as the state government. When you are purchasing the vehicle, you will be charged the central excise duty, central sales tax and state VAT. The road tax is calculated on the engine capacity, seating capacity, unladen weight and cost price. The tax is also priced on the type of vehicle used. Road tax is different for trucks, vans, cars, two wheelers, etc.

    Tax on 2 Wheelers:

    The tax charged on 2 wheelers is based on the cost of the vehicle and the age. The following is the rates for token tax for personalised vehicles:

    Motorcycle or scooter that have engine capacity of up to 50 CC 3% of the price of the motorcycle or scooter
    Motorcycle or scooter that have engine capacity above 50 CC 4% of the price of the motorcycle or scooter

    Tax on 4 Wheelers:

    Tax on four wheeler depends on the use of the vehicle and its classification. Vehicles that can be considered for this segment are cars and jeeps. The following are the rates for token tax for personalised four vehicles:

    Personal motor vehicles with engine capacity up to 1000 CC 2.5% of the price of the personal motor vehicle
    Personal motor vehicles with engine capacity above 1000 CC 3% of the price of the personal motor vehicle

    The rates of tax for transport vehicles are as follows:

    For first 15 years from the date of registration – Rs.1,500 p.a.

    After 15 years – Rs.1,650 p.a.

    Medium goods motor vehicles

    For first 15 years from the date of registration – Rs.2,000 p.a.

    After 15 years – Rs.2,200 p.a.

    Heavy goods motor vehicles

    For first 15 years from the date of registration – Rs.2,500 p.a.

    After 15 years – Rs.2,750 p.a.

    Ordinary, express, semi deluxe, deluxe, AC buses

    For first 15 years from the date of registration – Rs.500 per seat per annum subject to a maximum of Rs.35,000 p.a.

    After 15 years – Rs.550 per seat per annum subject to a maximum of Rs.35,000 p.a.

    Mini buses

    For first 15 years from the date of registration – Rs.500 per seat per annum subject to a maximum of Rs.25,000 p.a.

    After 15 years – Rs.550 per seat per annum subject to a maximum or Rs.25,000 p.a.

    Maxi cabs Rs.750 per seat per annum subject to a maximum of Rs.15,000 p.a.
    Motor cab Rs.350 per seat per annum subject to a maximum of Rs.10,000 p.a.
    Auto Rickshaw Rs.200 per seat per annum subject to a maximum of Rs.5,000 p.a.
    Buses for contract carriages Rs.1,000 per seat per annum subject to a maximum of Rs.52,000 p.a.
    Private sector vehicles owned by private institutions

    For first 15 years from the date of registration – Rs.500 per seat p.a.

    After 15 years – Rs.550 per seat p.a.

    Private sector motor cabs owned by commercial organisations and used for the purpose of carrying people on behalf of the owner of such vehicle for his trade or business. (banned from hire and reward)

    For first 15 years from the date of registration – Rs.500 per seat p.a.

    After 15 years – Rs.550 per seat p.a.

    Light construction equipment vehicles- maximum mass not exceeding 7.5 tonnes Rs.8,000 per annum
    Medium construction equipment vehicles- maximum mass exceeding 7.5 tonnes but not more than 12 tonnes Rs.11,000 per annum
    Heavy construction equipment vehicles- maximum mass exceeding 12 tonnes Rs.14,000 per annum
    Light recovery vans - maximum mass not exceeding 7.5 tonnes Rs.5,000 per annum
    Medium recovery vans - maximum mass exceeding 7.5 tonnes but not more than 12 tonnes Rs.6,000 per annum
    Heavy recovery vans- maximum mass exceeding 12 tonnes Rs.7,000 per annum
    Ambulance Rs.1,500 per annum
    Hearse van Rs.1,500 per annum

    How to pay Road Tax in Himachal Pradesh?

    The road tax is to be paid to the Regional Transport Office at the time of registering your vehicle. You will be required to provide the registration documents of the vehicle along with other supporting document. You can also pay the token tax online at the official website of Department of Transport Himachal Pradesh.
