Road tax in Himachal Pradesh is imposed by both the state and central government. The amount paid in road tax is different for two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The engine capacity and vehicle are the major factors that determine the tax rate.
When you are buying a vehicle in any state, there are two prices that you must be aware of, one is the ex-showroom price and the other is the on-road price. On-road price in Himachal Pradesh (Capital City: Shimla) is nothing but the manufacturer price plus the cost of registration and taxes due to the central and state government and the cost of vehicle insurance.
The taxes charged on the vehicles in Himachal Pradesh is based on the provisions of Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. It states the guidelines to calculate tax on the vehicles sold or registered in Himachal Pradesh.

The road tax is to be paid to the Regional Transport Office at the time of registering your vehicle. You will be required to provide the registration documents of the vehicle along with other supporting document. You can also pay the token tax online at the official website of Department of Transport Himachal Pradesh.
Individuals may follow the given steps while paying Himachal Pradesh road tax prices online:
Step 1: Visit the Vahan Citizen Services portal. Select the state, RTO and click on proceed.
Step 2: Navigate to the main menu and select RC related services and click on pay your tax.
Step 3: Submit your vehicle registration number to check the road tax amount due.
Step 4: Proceed to the payment gateway and select your preferred mode.
Handicapped owners solely using a vehicle for conveyance and owners of vehicles used for agricultural purposes are exempt from road tax in Himachal Pradesh.
You can pay the road taxes in Himachal Pradesh online by either choosing net banking or debit card.
If an individual pays tax for less than a quarter, he/she needs to pay it within the 7th of a month. Conversely, he/she has to pay the tax by the 15th of a month if it has been paid for one or more quarters. If the previous payment has been made for a period, an individual needs to pay tax by the last date of a month.
