The taxes charged on the vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir are based on the provisions of Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. This Section states the guidelines on how to calculate tax on the vehicles sold or registered in Jammu and Kashmir.

How to Pay Road Tax in Jammu and Kashmir?

  1. The road tax is to be paid to the Regional Transport Office when registering your vehicle.
  2. You will have to provide the registration documents for vehicle and other supporting documents.
  3. You can also pay the token tax online at the official website of Motor Vehicles Department, Government of Jammu and Kashmir.

Road tax on Older Vehicles increased by the Jammu & Kashmir Government

On 2 June 2020, the Jammu and Kashmir government hiked the road tax on vehicles that have purchased before 3 August 2019. The increase in road tax has been shared with the Transport authorities.

  1. There has been a strong demand from trade and business organisations, auto-dealers, and transporters to remove or at least amend the SRO-492 of 2019 that was dated 1 August 2019.
  2. The sales of automobiles have fallen drastically in Jammu and Kashmir and auto dealers have suffered massive losses. Auto dealers have been wanting a reduction in road tax from the 9% that has been imposed by the government.
  3. However, there have several issues in regards to the tax that has been levied on vehicles that have been purchased in states outside of the Jammu and Kashmir and old cars.
  4. The transport department has been looking to the government for a clarification regarding the same.

  • What is the penalty for failing to pay road tax in Jammu and Kashmir?

      If you fail to pay road tax in Jammu and Kashmir, you will have to pay a fine of up to Rs.100 in addition to the dues. If you do not pay the penalty, your vehicle will be seized.

  • What happens if I fail to show my token?

    On paying road tax in Jammu and Kashmir, a monthly, quarterly, or yearly token will be issued to you. This token must be visible on the vehicle. The penalty for displaying the token is Rs.50.

  • When do I have to pay additional tax?

    You must pay an additional tax if you have modified your vehicle in any way or made any alterations that cause it to be taxed at a higher rate. The difference between the two tax slabs is the amount of tax paid.
