How to get the temporary registration number in India?

If the owner has bought the vehicle recently, then he or she has to obtain a temporary registration number from the dealership from which the vehicle was bought. The temporary registration number is only valid until the vehicle gets a permanent registration number. The maximum period for which the temporary registration number is valid is a month. The vehicle has to be registered within this period by the Regional transport Office (RTO) in the concerned area of the owner.

Process for temporary registration of the vehicle

The steps to follow to obtain the temporary registration for a vehicle are as follows:

  • The owner of the vehicle has to fill up Form 20.
  • The form has to be submitted to the authority under whose jurisdiction the registration of the vehicle falls.
  • The form can also be submitted to the dealer who deals in the sale of new motor vehicles provided he or she is registered by the Transport Commissioner.
  • Charges will be levied by the registering authority for temporary registration of the vehicle which have to paid as per the Central Motor Vehicles Rule, 1989.
  • The relevant documents need to be submitted to the registering authority for temporary registration of the vehicle.
  • The documents to be submitted are:
  1. The application for the temporary registration of the vehicle or Form 20.
  2. The Sales Certificate of the vehicle which provides all the required details of the purchase of the vehicle needs to be submitted. It can be submitted via Form 21.
  3. The Road Worthiness Certificate of the vehicle which states that the vehicle has cleared all tests required for it to be operational on the road. It can be submitted via Form 22.
  4. A valid Insurance Certificate which states all the details about the insurance of the vehicle.
  5. A document which can be accepted as address proof of the owner of the vehicle.
  6. The Pollution Under Control Certificate is to be also provided.
  7. A copy of the PAN card of the owner of the vehicle and Form 60 or Form 61, whichever is applicable.

Extension of temporary registration of the vehicle

In case, the owner of the vehicle wants an extension of the temporary registration of the vehicle, he or she can do so by submitting the relevant documents to the registering authorities. The documents required are:

  1. The application for the temporary registration of the vehicle or Form 20.
  2. The Sales Certificate of the vehicle which provides all the required details of the purchase of the vehicle needs to be submitted. It can be submitted via Form 21.
  3. The Road Worthiness Certificate of the vehicle which states that the vehicle has cleared all tests required for it to be operational on the road. It can be submitted via Form 22.

  • Registration of auto rickshaws start boosting up in Pune

    The registration of auto rickshaws has started witnessing a surge in the areas of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad in Maharashtra. As per the new records, there has been a significant rise in the number of registrations of auto rickshaws in comparison to last month.

    The officials of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) said that the numbers are not as good as it used to be before the lockdown started. However, the numbers have increased manifold. The RTOs were also expecting a better growth as the permits were opened by the state government last year. The registration of vehicles had resumed in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad last month after the nationwide lockdown came to an end in Inda. As per the information quoted by an RTO official, the Pune RTO has registered 58 auto rickshaws between 18 May 2020 and 8 June 2020. The number increased to 114 by 15 June 2020 and jumped to 309 by 30 June 2020. He also added that there has been an increase in the registration of goods vehicles as well. During the same period, the number had touched the mark of 150 in Pimpri Chinchwad. The president of the Pune City Auto Rickshaw Federation Mr. Pradeep Bhalerao said that they have been receiving multiple queries in regard to issuance and enrolment for auto rickshaw permits.
