Functions of RTO Offices in Bangalore

The primary function of the RTO is to ensure that all the rules and regulations under the Motor Vehicle Act are followed. Given below are some of the functions of the Bangalore RTO offices:

Types of Vehicle Registration

There are two types of vehicle registrations:

Temporary Vehicle Registration: A temporary vehicle registration of one month’s validity is issued by the dealer as soon as it is purchased.

Permanent Vehicle Registration: This should be obtained as soon as the temporary registration expires.

Types of Driving Licences issued in RTO Bangalore

The following are the licenses that applicants above the age of 18 can apply for:

  • Two-wheelers without gear such as scooters
  • Two-wheelers with gear such as certain scooters and bikes
  • Light Motor Vehicles such as cars, three-wheelers, jeeps, vans, etc.
  • Medium/Heavy Commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, or trailers

Those who are 16 years and above can apply for licenses for motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 50cc

Taxi and autorickshaw drivers do not need to apply for separate commercial driving licences. The law mandates that their Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) licence is sufficient for the purpose.

  • Politician arrested for demanding money from RTO Inspector

    Local Ramnagar Police have arrested a politician who is supposedly close to a member of parliament and a member of the legistative assembly on charges of extortion. The arrested person had demanded Rs.40,000 from the RTO Inspector as ‘protection money’. The accused had threatened the RTO inspector of an anti-corruption inquiry. The person was arrested after superintendent of police laid a trap following a complaint lodged by the RTO inspector.

  • 3 months suspension of driving licence if the helmet is not worn in Karnataka

    In Karnataka riding a two-wheeler without a helmet can result in a driving licence suspension for three months along with a fine. According to the new Motor Vehicles Act 2019, riding without a helmet will call for an Rs.1,000 fine and a three-month suspension.

    The Transport Department officials stated that the Supreme Court had appointed a committee on road safety via a video conference which recommended the enforcing of the new rules. Riding without helmets has been contributed to the most among the road violations in the city. The number of cases booked by the police against riders without helmets was 16.4 lakh in 2018 and increased to 20.7 lakh in 2020.

  • Bengaluru RTO seizes 6 buses for violating permit conditions

    On Tuesday, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Bengaluru cracked the whip and seized as many as six buses for violating permit conditions. As per reports from the transport department, the buses were seized during a special operation which was carried out on Bellary Road under the direction of Yelahanka Regional Transport Officer. The buses which were seized during the operation had permit documents from Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

    A senior RTO official stated that the operation was conducted based on confirmed information that a few buses were operating without paying taxes to the state. He added that the owners have been issued notices and will need to pay the fine amount as well as submit the necessary documents. It must be noted here that there have been several complaints had been raised by activists as well as KSRTC about contract carriage buses plying as regular state carriage buses in the state.
