How to Get a Driving Licence in Telangana

After much struggle and debate, Telangana was formed as a state in India in June 2014. A lot of rules and regulations were framed to make this new state function better. Eligibility criteria to apply for a driving licence in Telangana

To apply for a driving Licence in Telangana, the following eligibility requirements have to be met:

  • An individual should be at least 18 years old to apply for a valid driving licence in Telangana.
  • An applicant should have a valid Learner’s Licence before applying for a driving licence in the state. Without a Learner’s Licence, one cannot apply for a DL.
  • An applicant should apply for a DL after a minimum of 30 days and within 180 days from the date the Learner’s Licence was issued.
  • If you are over 20 years of age and already have a valid DL, you can opt to apply for a DL for commercial vehicles.
  • If you will have to clear the driving test to get a DL. This means that you should know all the traffic rules and regulations before you apply for a DL.

Documentation required to apply for a driving licence in Telangana

If an applicant meets the eligibility criteria mentioned above, the next step is to keep all the essential documents handy. These include:

  • A passport size photo.
  • A copy of the PAN card.
  • A copy of the medical fitness certificate.
  • A copy of the parent/guardian’s written consent with date and signature, if the applicant is a minor.
  • A copy of the address proof (Passport/Life insurance policy/Voter ID/Ration card).

Types Of Licences in Telangana

The government of Telangana issues two types of driving Licences, which include:

  • Learner’s Licence: Before applying for the permanent driving Licence in Telangana, an applicant has to get a learner’s Licence first. This is a temporary Licence which has a validity of 6 months and is issued when the applicant is in the process of learning a motor vehicle.
  • Permanent Licence: After 1 month of getting a learner’s Licence (i.e. from the date of issue), an applicant becomes eligible to apply for a permanent Licence.

How To apply for permanent licence in Telangana online?

As mentioned above, a Learner's Licence is a temporary Licence which has a validity of 6 months and is issued when the applicant is in the process of learning a motor vehicle. Ideally, before your LL expires, you should apply for your DL. Only applicants who have had a valid Learner's Licence for a period of at least 30 days or within 180 days from the time the LL was issued can apply for a permanent driving licence.

After receiving the learner’s Licence, the applicant can learn driving a vehicle under the supervision of a person who has a permanent Licence. However, if the applicant is applying for a commercial Licence, then he/she has to take his/her driving lessons from a certified school.

Steps to apply for a driving licence online in Telangana

  • Visit the Government of Telangana Transport Department official website.
  • On the homepage, on your left hand side, you will see a link named “Fresh Driving Licence”. Please click that link to proceed.
  • You will now be taken to an Automated Online Services page, where you will be allowed to fill an automated form online to apply for a DL.
  • Please fill the form accurately. You will be asked to fill details like your Learning Licence Number, date of birth, and mobile number.
  • You will be sent an One-Time Password (OTP) on your registered mobile number. Please enter the password in the space provided and proceed.
  • You will also be asked to enter your personal information like your Surname and Aadhaar Number. Once you fill these details, please click on “Submit”.
  • Once the application is submitted, the applicant gets an “application reference number” followed by notification via SMS/e-mail to take the permanent Licence test.
  • On the test day, the applicant has to bring his/her vehicle. Note that the vehicle type has to be the same that was written at the time of filling the application.
  • During the driving test, the applicant has to drive in front of the RTO authority. The test can also involve asking questions about the general traffic rules, road regulations,

How To Renew A Driving Licence In Telangana Online?

  • Visit the Government of Telangana Transport Department official website.
  • On the homepage, on your left hand side, you will see a link named “Renew Driving Licence”. Please click that link to proceed.
  • You will be asked to select from various options like renewal of licence, duplicate licence, change of address, or surrender of licence.
  • You will be asked if you have your original licence, please select yes or no to proceed.
  • Once you click on “Go”, you will be asked to enter your DL number, place it was issued, your date of birth, and mobile number.
  • An One-Time Password (OTP) will be sent to your registered phone number.
  • Enter the password in the space provided and proceed.
  • You will be asked to upload a scanned copy of your original driving licence. Please upload the required documents and submit your application.
  • Upon verification, your new driving licence will be sent to you via post.

  • Visit the nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) in your area.
  • Ask for a form to apply for a fresh driving licence.

  • Pay the respective fees in the fee counter.

Things to keep in mind:

  • A permanent driving Licence has an expiry date and is valid only until the date that is mentioned at the back of the card.
  • If the date has expired, usually a duration of 30 days is granted as the grace period for renewing the Licence.
  • If the licence holder renews it within 5 years from the expiry date, he/she is exempted from the test. However, the Licence will be valid from the date of renewal.
  • Keep a scanned copy of form, driving Licence, address proof, and passport size photo handy.
