As per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, is it compulsory for citizens to hold a valid driving licence to be able to drive a motor vehicle on public roads. The procedure for applying for a driving licence in Sikkim is discussed below.

Types of Driving Licence in Sikkim

There are 3 main categories under which Driving Licence for non-commercial vehicles can be listed. Driving Licence for Commercial Vehicles or Commercial DL is a separate category which is not being discussed here.

The 3 categories of non-commercial DLs are as follows:

1) Offline Procedure:

In this procedure, you will be required to follow the steps listed below:

  • Step 1: Visit the nearest RTO and collect the application form (Form 4 for LMV and Form 5 for commercial vehicles).
  • Step 2: Duly fill up the details on the form.
  • Step 3: Submit the prescribed documents and photographs to the RTO along with your application form.
  • Step 4: Select an appointment for the first part of the test wherein your traffic rules knowledge will be tested.
  • Step 5: You will get a learner’s licence once you pass the test. Followed by that you will have to apply for the permanent driving licence within 30 to 180 days of the issuance of your learner’s licence.

2) Online Procedure:

In this procedure, you will be required to follow the steps listed below:

  • Step 1: Visit the official website of the transport department of Sikkim.
  • Step 2: Navigate to the ‘Driving Licence’ option.
  • Step 3: Download the application form and duly fill up the details on it.
  • Step 4: Submit the prescribed documents and photographs to the RTO along with your application form.
  • Step 5: Select an appointment for the first part of the test wherein your traffic rules knowledge will be tested.
  • Step 6: You will get a learner’s licence once you pass the test. Followed by that you will have to apply for the permanent driving licence within 30 to 180 days of the issuance of your learner’s licence.

How to Apply for a Duplicate Driving Licence in Sikkim

If you have misplaced your permanent driving licence, you can apply for a duplicate one through the RTO. You can follow either of the online or the offline methods for the same.

1) Offline Procedure:

In this procedure, you will be required to follow the steps listed below:

  • Step 1: Visit the nearest RTO and collect the required application form LLD.
  • Step 2: Duly fill up the details on the form.
  • Step 3: Submit the prescribed documents and photographs to the RTO along with your application form.
  • Step 4: Deposit the duplicate licence fee of Rs.200.
  • Step 5: Once the documents are verified, the duplicate licence will be reissued to the applicant.

2) Online Procedure:

In this procedure, you will be required to follow the steps listed below:

  • Step 1: Visit the official website of the transport department of Sikkim.
  • Step 2: Download the application form LLD and duly fill up the details on it.
  • Step 3: Submit the prescribed documents and photographs to the RTO along with your application form.
