But, no matter how careful we may be in keeping our documents safe, sometimes they are misplaced or lost. What do we do if we lose our driving licences? Transport Offices across India offer duplicate driving Licences in case the holder has lost the original or if the original driving licence has been stolen.

In case you have lost your original driving licence or if it has been stolen or mutilated, you can get a duplicate driving licence from the same RTO that issued your driving licence. Documents Required for Duplicate Driving Licence

In case you wish to apply for a Duplicate Driver's Licence following the loss of your original driver licence, you will be required to submit the following documents for the purpose. The following list of documents is required to obtain a Duplicate driving licence. This list of documents may or may not vary for each state.

  1. Application Form LLD (for intimation of loss or destruction of driving licence and application for duplicate)
  2. A First Instance Report (FIR) or NCR of the licence, in case it is lost or stolen.
  3. Original Licence (if he same is in a torn, mutilated or soiled state).
  4. Attested photocopies of the original driver licence (in case the same is lost).
  5. Details of the Driving Licence
  6. Passport sized photographs
  7. Address Proof documents for reference
  8. Age proof documents for reference

Online Procedure to Apply for a Duplicate Driving Licence

Some state RTOs offer the feature to apply for a duplicate driving licence online. You can Google the same to see if that facility is offered by the State Transport Department on their website.

  • You will have to completely fill and submit the LLD form. Also, you will have an Upload option where you will be able to upload all necessary documents.
  • You will be required to take a printout of the completely filled form LLD. Attach photographs wherever necessary and sign the form.
  • Handover the form at the RTO Office from where you originally got your Driving Licence from. Submit all necessary documents. You will not be required to take the Driving test again to get a duplicate licence.
  • Once this is done, the duplicate driving licence will be sent to your registered home address via post. Also, you will be given a receipt which can be used in lieu of driving licence till you get your duplicate Driving Licence.

Offline Procedure to get a Duplicate Driving Licence

Applying for a Duplicate Driving Licence at the RTO is easier than online application if you stay close to the RTO that issued your original Driving Licence. Follow the steps given below to get your duplicate Driving Licence from the RTO without any hassles.

  • Visit the RTO that issued your Driving licence. Procure a Form LLD which is for the application of duplicate driving licence. Fill the form completely and sign the form.
  • Submit the form and attach all supporting documents as mentioned in the previous sections. Additional documents might be asked for depending on the reason of applying for a duplicate licence.
  • You will be required to pay a nominal fee for getting your duplicate driving licence. Once this is done, you will get a receipt which can be used in place of a driving Licence till you get a duplicate licence. The duplicate driving licence will be sent to your registered home address via post.

  1. What is the validity of my duplicate driving licence?

    The validity of your duplicate driving licence will be the same as your original driving licence. Remember, you are not renewing or correcting your licence by applying for a duplicate driving licence. The information in your duplicate driving licence will be the same as in your original licence.

  2. I got my driving licence in hyderabad which was stolen recently. Can I apply for a duplicate driving licence at the Bangalore RTO?

    No, you will have to apply for a duplicate driving licence only at the RTO which issued your Driving Licence previously.

  3. Under what circumstances will a duplicate driving licence be issued?

    Generally, a duplicate driving licence will be issued under the following circumstances.

  • Number of Driver’s License issued in Karnataka fall

    According to the Mysuru (East) RTO, the number of Driving License (DL) that is issued per day has dropped down from 150 to 70. The number of Learner’s License (LL) that have been issued has also fallen from 100 to 50. Earlier, there were no renewals available, however, around 50 DLs are being renewed per day. The target that is set by the RTO in a month is Rs.2.93 crore. However, only half of that target has been achieved since the coronavirus outbreak. The revenue that is being collected has improved when compared to the months of April and May. The Transport Department has found it tough to achieve its revenue target since the coronavirus outbreak and the subsequent lockdown restrictions. However, the situation has improved recently. Since the outbreak, the registration of vehicles has also fallen drastically. Several restrictions have been imposed by the RTO to abide by the government rules.

  • Ludhiana police ease fines on driving with an expired license

    The Ludhiana police have taken a call to ease the rules when it comes to people holding expired driving licenses, vehicle pollution certificates and vehicle insurance due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The Police Commissioner of Ludhiana, Rakesh Agarwal on Friday stated that the people will not be fined for this. He also stated that they will be assigning 300 people from different NGOs and other localities in order to create awareness in the areas and will be called ‘ambassadors. The market associations and residential associations will be awarded for their contribution depending on performance.

    However, PC Agarwal stated that there will be fines issued for not wearing masks and will be giving them free masks to wear in order to understand their importance. For the people who have not been able to renew their driving license, pollution certificate and insurance will be given adequate time to do the same.

  • Government finds 16.72 lakh driving licenses to be ‘possible duplicates’

    After analysing the records of 6.70 crore driving licences, as many as 16.72 lakh driving licences were found to be ‘possible duplicates’. The revelation which was made in parliament comes after Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport and Highways Minister claimed that 30 percent of driving licenses in the country were ‘bogus’. Mansukh Lal Mandaviya, the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways informed Rajya Sabha that the percentage of probable duplicates stands at 2.5 percent as per the analysis carried out by National Informatics Centre (NIC). He added that the information has been shared with the states for further action as the implementation of provisions of Motor Vehicles Act falls under the purview of the state governments. It needs to be mentioned that the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2017 was passed by the Lok Sabha and is currently in Rajya Sabha for consideration.

    It is highly recommended that you take a few duplicate copies of your driving license and keep one in the vehicle at all times.   • 40% of Hyderabad City Drivers Do Not Have Valid License

    Although there are more than 36 lacs drivers and riders in Hyderabad, around 40 percent of them do not have valid driving licenses. This is a shocking revelation as the city has reported more road accidents than ever. These people are now booking slots for Learners License tests beforehand and anticipating eagerly for their turns. Indication for this could be initiated as numerous folks are seen clustering together in front of the test centres. Everyday more than 1200 applicants are going in for the tests in different Regional Transport Authority (RTA) offices in the IT hub. An RTA official confirmed that 1450 aspirants took the test on Wednesday last week. The problem of large number of people driving around the city sans licenses was a key concern raised at Traffic Awareness Programme organized by Goshamahal Traffic Training Institute held on the same day. Tollywood artists Mr. Siva Reddy, Mr. Rajeev Kanakala, and Mr. Raja sensitized the learners about complying with traffic law. Hundreds participated in the programme.
