  • Best Equity Funds in India

  • When it comes to choosing the right equity fund, you cannot depend solely on the reputation of the fund manager you have chosen. You need to factor in your personal goals and risk capacity, the trends in the market that you wish to invest in, the growth of the companies whose stocks you would like to invest in, the level of risk involved, and the returns generated by the fund. You may also want to look at the past performance of the fund manager, the annual charges required, and the size of the fund.

Once you are clear about the goals and performance metrics, you need to look at the Net Asset Values (NAVs) and the returns that the equity fund is generating. The NAV is the price per share of the mutual fund, and is published on a daily basis. It is the value of the fund’s assets after deducting the value of its liabilities. A fund’s NAV indicates the price of each share in the mutual fund depending on the number of shares/stocks it holds. It is the reference price while buying a mutual fund – whether equity or debt – but it is not the best way to judge the performance of an equity fund.

A better way to ascertain the growth prospects of a fund is to check in periodic return values. These values are available on stock exchange websites, financial websites and newspaper websites, or can be obtained from the fund managers. In this article we shall look at some of the best equity mutual funds available in India as on July 4, 2016. We shall discuss the top 3 equity funds in Large-Cap, Small and Mid-Cap and Diversified Equity segments. The easiest way to do this is to look at the ranking of various mutual funds by India’s key credit rating agency CRISIL (Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited).
