How to Apply for a Driving Licence in Assam Online

As stated previously, a Learner's Licence is a temporary licence that is valid for six months and is provided to applicants who are learning to drive a motor vehicle. Ideally, you should apply for your DL before your LL expires. Only applicants having a valid Learner's Licence for at least 30 days or within 180 days of the LL's issuance are eligible to apply for a permanent driver's licence.

Steps to Apply for a Driving Licence Online

Step 1: Visit the Assam Transport official website.

Step 2: Navigate to the e-services portal.

Step 3: From the list of links shown, click on "RTO services."

Step 4: You will have to find the link to download Form 4.

Step 5: A list of sub-links will be displayed, click on the link "Application for Licence to drive a motor vehicle (Form 4)."

Step 6: Once you have downloaded the form, the next step is to fill the Form 4.

Step 7: An online editable format of Form 4 will open for you to edit.

Step 8: Fill the required details. These include the applicant's name, mobile number, email address, PAN number, type of motorcycle, permanent address, temporary address, birthplace, date of birth, educational qualification, identification marks, citizenship status, blood group, etc.

Step 9: Upload the medical certificate (Form 1A), learner's Licence, and the certificate from the driving school.

Step 10: Enter the captcha code and click on the "submit" button.

Step 11: Once the application is submitted, the applicant gets an "application reference number" followed by notification via SMS/e-mail to take the permanent Licence test.

Step 12: On the test day, the applicant has to bring his/her vehicle. Note that the vehicle type has to be the same that was written at the time of filling the application.

Step 13: During the driving test, the applicant has to drive in front of the RTO authority. The test can also involve asking questions about the general traffic rules, road regulations.

Step 14: The results are announced in a few hours. If the applicant fails, he has to redo the entire process.

Step 15: If the applicant passes the test, the driving Licence will be sent by post in few days.

Eligibility Criteria for Driving Licence in Assam

To apply for a driving Licence in Assam, the following eligibility requirements have to be met:

1. An individual should be at least 18 years old to get a DL for light motor vehicles.
2. An individual should be 21 years old to get a Licence to drive transport vehicles like auto rickshaws, taxis, motorcycles, pickup trucks, etc.
3. An individual who is below 18 and at least 16 years old can get a driving Licence for motorcycles that do not exceed 50cc.

Documentation Required for Driving Licence in Assam

Step 4: A list of sub-links is displayed from which click on the link named "Application for renewal of driving Licence."

Step 5: An online editable format of Form 9 opens now.

Step 6: Fill the required details. These include the applicant's name, mobile number, email address, PAN number, Licence number, issue date, licensing authority, date of renewal, vehicle authorized to be driven, expiry date, and the reason for a delay in the renewal (if renewed after the grace period).

Step 7: Upload the form 1, form 1A, passport size photo, driving Licence, and address proof.

Step 8: Enter the captcha code and click on the "submit" button.

Step 9: The application will be processed and the renewed Licence is issued by post.

Things to Keep in Mind

1. A permanent driving Licence has an expiry date and is valid only until the date that is mentioned at the back of the card.
2. If the date has expired, usually a duration of 30 days is granted as the grace period for renewing the Licence.
3. If the licence holder renews it within 5 years from the expiry date, he/she is exempted from the test. However, the Licence will be valid from the date of renewal.
4. Keep a scanned copy of form 1, form 1A, driving Licence, address proof, and passport size photo handy.
