According to the Moto Vehicles Act 1988, in India, it is illegal to drive without a valid driving licence. However, you need to follow a procedure to get a valid driving licence. You must first get a learner’s licence. After completing a month from the learner’s licence issue date, you can apply for a permanent driving licence. The RTO will test your driving skills and if you pass the test, you will get a permanent driving licence.

However, you will have to apply again if you wish to acquire a licence for additional categories of vehicles. To apply for additional vehicle categories, you need to submit Form 8 at the RTO.
