Back in the day, filing for an EPF claim was quite a hassle. The whole process involving the required attestation of one's employer and so on to make a withdrawal took a few months and in some cases years.

Now, following the Government of India's initiative to ease the process of settling EPF claims, EPF customers can get their claim settled in 5 days.

All that the customer needs to do is link his/her Aadhaar card to their UAN to get the job done in a few days.  Waiting for your EPF claim settlement for months has now become a thing of the past.

Withdrawal of Form 13

The Composite Form introduced by EPFO, also known as Form 11, is set to replace Form 13 in all cases of online automatic transfer.

Currently, employees use Form 13 to file for PF (Provident Fund) account transfer requests, from one employer to another. The retirement fund body has now decided that Form 11 shall be used for all auto transfer cases, instead of Form 13.

What are the Requirements for the EPF Claim Settlement

The Government of India has introduced the Composite Claims Form - which basically holds the details of the customer's Aadhaar card. Using this Composite Claim form, employees now do not need the attestation of their employers to make a withdrawal. The introduction of the Composite Claims Form has reduced the time taken for an EPF claim settlement, reducing the process to within 5 days.

To ensure that the claim is done within 5 days, employees need to fulfil certain conditions.

  1. The EPF claim has to filed online - https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/WhichClaimForm.php
  2. Only employees with a UAN can file for PF settlements.
  3. Employees have to then update their Aadhaar card details and their bank details - account number, account name, bank name, etc. - on the EPF portal.
  4. The details have to be verified by their current employer, including the KYC documents provided by the employee.

Benefits of the Composite Claims Form

Recently introduced by the Government of India, the Composite Claims Form replaces the benefits that come with Form 19, Form 10C (for pension) and Form 31 (for partial withdrawals from EPF). Now, to make EPF settlements, customers must only fill the Composite Claims Form.

The benefits of the Composite Claims Form are listed below:

  1. For the claim settlement process, employer’s attestation will not be mandatory
  1. To claim partial withdrawal, documentary evidence not required

Steps to Make a Claim Settlement

To make a claim settlement, employees need to follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Login to the EPF member portal.
  2. On the website, click on "KYC" that comes under the "Manage Option".
  3. Now, enter the details of your Aadhaar card and bank.
  4. Once the details have been entered, click on "submit".
  5. The Aadhaar card details and bank details have to be verified and approved by your current employer.
  6. Customers can file for a claim settlement only after two months of changing their job.
  7. Once your employer has verified your details and you have filed for a PF settlement, an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
  8. Enter the OTP and submit the Composite Claims Form.

Once this is done, the process for making a withdrawal is initiated and employees can expect their PF settlement within 5-10 days.

Tax Deductions for Premature Withdrawals

The EPF has a lock-in period of 5 years, within with any withdrawal made will be termed as a premature withdrawal. All withdrawals made after completion of 5 years in the EPF will be completely tax free as the EPF enjoys the EEE (Exempt, Exempt, Exempt) status. PF Withdrawals made before completion of 5 years in the scheme will be subject to TDS (Tax deducted from source) under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. For example, if an employee has worked in one company for three years and another one for two years and has been making contributions towards the same PF account, he/she is eligible for withdrawals that would be completely tax free.

Currently, the EPF has an interest rate of 8.25% - the highest in tax savings instruments. Having most processes online for the EPF is another big bonus for customers. Now, customers can make EPF contributions and withdrawals online - a factor that is luring more and more employees into this savings scheme.

New Facility to Link Aadhaar with UAN Online

EPFO subscribers can now link their Aadhaar number with their UAN online. The EPFO has introduced this system since linking one's Aadhaar card details has become a verification requirement for online claims.

The EPFO launched this new facility just before Diwali in 2017. According to the retirement fund body, this facility will provide faster and better services to UAN members.

After linking Aadhaar or the UID (Unique Identity Number), a unique number issued as identification by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), with UAN, EPFO subscribers can access other online services of EPFO which needs Aadhaar linking.

The process of linking Aadhaar with UAN through the EPFO website are detailed below:

  1. An EPFO subscriber can avail the facility of online linking by going to "eKYC Portal" section under "Online Services" on their website.
  2. The subscriber should proceed to the link called "Link UAN Aadhaar".
  3. The subscriber has to provide his/her UAN to move ahead. He/she will receive an OTP on their mobile number registered with UAN.
  4. Once OTP verification is done, the subscriber has to provide his/her 12-digit Aadhaar number. After this, they will receive another OTP via their mobile or email seeded with Aadhaar.
  5. After this OTP is verified, providing the UAN details match the one on the Aadhaar database, the UAN shall get linked with Aadhaar.
