The Regional Passport Office located at Ahmedabad started functioning in November 1969. The passport office offers services to citizens of North Gujarat, Central Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch regions. The Ahmedabad passport office is one of the 37 passport offices that exists in the country. The RPO’s vision like all other RPOs in the country is ‘To deliver passport services to citizens in a timely, transparent, more accessible, reliable manner and a comfortable environment through streamlined processes and committed trained and motivated workforce’. Apart from the RPO, there are 4 Passport Seva Kendras and 11 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs).

The RPO covers the districts of Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad Rural, Amreli, Anand, Banaskantha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Dahod, Diu, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Kheda, Kutch, Mehsana, Panchmahals, Patan, Porbandar, Rajkot, Rajkot Rural, Sabarkantha, Surendranagar, Vadodara, and Vadodara Rural. In the previous year, the RPO received 6,47,952 applications were received while passports and miscellaneous services rendered was 6,43,446.

Functions and Duties of Ahmedabad Regional Passport Office

Passport applications are accepted from applicants at the RPO as well as in the PSKs and POPSKs who have appointments on the time and date slot booked on Applicants are given   a specific date and time after they make the payment of the online fees. The work-flow below provides the process that applicants need to follow while visiting the passport office in Ahmedabad.

  • Counter A - Scrutiny of passport application, receipt of passport application, verification of data, scanning and collection of cash is carried by TCS staff.
  • Counter B - The Verifying Officer verifies the submitted passport application.
  • Counter C - The Granting Officer carries out the granting and index checking of the passport application. Once it is done, the application is returned to the applicant.
    • The police verification is sent to the concerned district electronically.
    • Once the police verification is completed, it is sent back electronically and the report is sent later.
    • Post successful police verification, other activities like passport printing, lamination, stamping of Passport Officer’s signature on the passport, passport delivery are taken care of.
    • Complex policy cases like double/multiple passport, impersonation etc are also processed at the RPO.
    • PCC services are also granted and delivered to applicants through the counters if the police report is available in the system.

Process Involved in Applying for a Passport

The applicants who wish to avail a passport can apply for it by visiting Apart from submitting the application form online, applicants can also make the payment of the fee for issuing a new passport/renewal with the help of the various payment options as well as schedule an appointment to submit their documents.  Once the form is successfully submitted, the applicant receives a unique Application Reference Number (ARN).

After, the application form is submitted, police verification is conducted. On successfully clearing the police verification process, the passport is sent to the address mentioned in the application form by registered post.

Steps to Submit Online Passport Application

  1. Visit
  2. Log in with the help of the username and password.
  3. Select ‘Apply for fresh passport/ normal/ express (tatkal) mode’.
  4. Fill out the application form with relevant details
  5. Click ‘Submit’.
  6. Pay the required fee.
  7. Schedule an appointment to submit the required documents.
  8. Once the appointment is scheduled, the ARN will be generated.
  9. Take a photocopy of the receipt with the ARN.
  10. Carry the original and photocopies of the required documents which you’ve selected at the time of submitting the application form online.
  11. Submitted application and the documents will be verified.
  12. The application status will be intimated through email and or text messages.
  13. Police verification will be initiated.
  14. Upon successful police verification, the newly printed passport will be issued and sent via registered-mail of the Indian Post.
