Nearly two years after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) approved the relocation of the Ludhiana Passport Seva Kendra in February 2023, the process remains at a standstill, causing significant inconvenience to thousands of applicants. With the onset of winter, visitors are struggling with inadequate facilities at the existing centre.
Despite multiple assurances, the passport centre—operational since 2011—continues to face major infrastructural issues, including limited space, insufficient parking, and an inadequate waiting area. In addition to serving Ludhiana, the centre also caters to applicants from Khanna, Jagraon, and Moga, further straining its capacity.
The demand for relocation is not new. In February 2023, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora wrote to the MEA, urging it to shift the centre to a larger facility, citing space constraints and long wait times. The ministry responded, assuring that efforts were underway to find a suitable location. However, nearly two years later, no concrete action has been taken.
