Driving Licence Rules in India

The Union Ministry of Road Transport introduced new driving license rules in India, where individuals need not appear for the driving test to get a driving licence. Individuals will need to clear a test and get training at a driving training centre that is government accredited.

The new rules will come with several variants and a different fee structure and came into effect on 1 July 2022.

Process to Apply for a Driving Licence

The procedure to apply for a driving license online is mentioned below: 

  1. Visit the official website.
  2. Choose the state.
  3. Choose the license type.
  4. Completely fill the application form and submit it.
  5. Upload the relevant documents.
  6. Pay the fee.
  7. Verify the status of the payment.
  8. Click on ‘Submit’.

The driving license will be sent to your residence via post.

Private Driving Training Centres - Rules 

The rules that must be followed by private driving training centres are mentioned below:

  1. The training for an HMV license will be 38 hours and must be completed by six weeks.
  2. The two different sections that must be available in a training centre are Theory and Practical. The practical class must be completed in 21 hours, while the theory class must be completed in 8 hours.
  3. The training for a light vehicle license must be a minimum of 29 hours and should be completed by four weeks.
  4. The trainer must have a driving experience of at least five years.
  5. The trainer must have knowledge of biometric and IT systems.
  6. Trainers must have completed a diploma or high school.
  7. The Private Driving Training Centre must have a testing track.
  8. In the case two-wheelers, the size of land must be at least one acre, and for four-wheelers, the size of the land must be at least two acres.

Documents Required

The list of documents that must be submitted when applying for a driving license are mentioned below: 

  1. Form 1 and Form 1A.
  2. Form 4.
  3. Passport-sized photographs.
  4. Proof of address such as LIC certificate, utility bill, rental agreement, Aadhaar Card, Passport, or Ration Card.
  5. Proof of age such as employer certificate, PAN Card, Passport, birth certificate, or education certificate.
