One of the most important documents that can be procured by the individual is a Voter ID as this document not only allows an individual to exercise his or her right to vote, but also acts as a proof of address and identity. Applicants can apply for Voter ID online or offline. If they wish to apply online, they can visit the website of the Chief Electoral Officer in their area and procure the forms. The relevant form will have to be filled and submitted along with the respective documents.

  • Government Website - You must log on to the official website of the Government ( This particular website contains all the details that you must know about online Voter ID application process. You can also get to know about the documents that must be submitted during the process.
  • Fill in the correct form - If you are applying for the Voter ID card for the first time, you should fill in the details on Form-6. You will have to submit the duly filled form along with the documents required. The documents must be scanned and passport size images of the applicant must be attached wherever needed.
  • Submission of official documents - Hard copy of the official documents must be sent to the electoral office nearest to your residence. It is advisable that you submit such important documents in person and avoid sending them by courier or post.
  • Process of Voter Card Verification - When you submit the form along with the documents, they are checked properly. An electoral officer verifies your address by talking to your neighbours and other members of the society/neighbourhood.

Application Number For Voter Card Verification:

When you apply for a Voter ID, either offline or online, you must make sure that you keep a track of the application number so that you can check at any point the status of your application. You will be assigned an application number by the ECI (Election Commission of India) when you register for a voter's ID. This number is usually a set of 11 digits.

EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card)Number:

This is a set of unique digits that are generated when an individual enrolls for the Voter's ID.

How does the process of Election Card Verification work?

  • Applicants will have to first procure the required form either online or offline, fill and submit it along with the required documents.
  • There are different forms available based on the requirements. For example, if applicants have to register themselves as voters for the first time, they will have to procure Form 6. If they wish to correct or change certain details in their Voter ID, they will have to submit Form 8.
  • Once this is done, based on the documents that they have submitted such as Address and Identity proof, their details will be verified.
  • Only after this is done, will they be eligible to receive a Voter ID. Applicants will also receive an acknowledgement number.
  • After all their documents have been verified, they will receive a visit from their Booth Level Officer who will come to their residence and verify relevant details. In case the details do not match, then the application will be cancelled.
  • If details are to the satisfaction of the Booth Level Officer then the verification will be complete and applicants will receive their Voter ID by post after around 2 to 3 weeks.

India has a number of political parties vying for a seat in the country and each party will try its best to gain the maximum number of votes.   • Family details of voters can be linked in voter verification drive

    Citizens who wish to make sure that all members of their family vote at the same booth can use their voter ID to register all family members together. Doing so would mean that the whole family is linked, and members will get the chance to cast their votes at the same booth. Voters have been urged by election authorities to look for their names online before confirming them along with their addresses. All the family members will also have to be verified as voters before the 13th of February in keeping with the current electors verification program. At the moment, election authorities say that the drive has attracted a 70% response. Citizens have been asked to check their names, and in case corrections are required, they have been asked to apply for the same immediately. Alternatively, they could also enroll as new voters on the official election website. The drive commenced on the 11th of November last year and will end on the 13th of February. An extension may be granted on the 13 February deadline if the response gets better.

  • Election Commission (EC) extends online voter ID verification

    The last date for online verification of voter IDs has been extended till November 18 by the Election Commission of India. In a notification, the commission observed that the progress of the Electors Verification Programme (EVP) has been very slow and that a large number of voters were yet to verify their voter IDs. It added that a huge number of forms have been received by it for inclusion, deletion and correction. It needs to be mentioned here that the forms must be handled before the draft publication. The Commission which had previously set the deadline for online verification for voter IDs as 15 October stated that the Chief Electoral Officers had also requested for additional time to complete the large amount of work.

    It must be noted here that the EVP was launched by the Election Commission on September 1 with the aim of updating the electoral rolls through crowdsourcing. Under the programme, a voter from each family gets a username and password which allows him/her to upload all documents related to electoral registration of himself/herself and the family members.

  • Electors Verification Programme (EVP) under Special Summary Revision 2020 launched in Telangana

    In a bid to improve the electoral rolls, the Electors Verification Programme (EVP) was launched on September 1 in the state of Telangana. The programme has been launched under the Special Summary Revision 2020. The Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana has urged the people of the state to make use of the programme and verify their details in the National Voters Service portal of the Election Commission. The CEO added that in addition to verifying the details of existing voters, one can furnish the details of eligible un-enrolled family members born on or before 01.01.2001 as well as prospective voters born between 02.01.2002 and 01.01.2003.

    It must be noted here that as part of the programme, Form 8 will be issued to the individuals in case there is any discrepancy in the details, Form 7 in case of dead/shifted members, and Form 6 for registration of un-enrolled eligible electors.

  • EC and AAP clash on the issue of deleted voter verification exercise

    The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Election Commission (EC) have clashed on the issue of deleted voter verification exercise. The exercise was conducted between 16th and 18th November. The allegations made by AAP have been rejected and termed ‘baseless’ by the District Election Officer (DEO) of the south-east region in Delhi. After AAP alleged that the exercise was a farce, the Chief Election Officer (CEO) of the Delhi election commission formed 11 teams to verify if the list of deleted voters was correct or not.

    AAP leaders have termed the investigation process by the election commission as “farcical” and a “joke”. To this the DEO’s office has responded by saying that the investigation process conducted by the election commission is completely fair and just. It also defended its own verification process of deletion of names from the  voter’s list by saying that it was factual and correct.

  • Voter Verifications through Aadhar Cards in Chandigarh MC

    The latest election update from Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is about a newfangled administrative policy, that seeks to introduce fair and smooth sailing practices with the help of technology. In a meeting attended by the Home Secretary, Joint Chief Electoral Officer and other prominent state officials, it was decided that voters can now get their verifications done through Aadhar cards. However, for those individuals without an Aadhar number, a voter ID or ration card will suffice.

    According to the reports from State Election Commision, this feature is expected to be launched in a few booths on a pilot basis. Voters will first have to register with an Aadhar card and subsequently get verified by simply giving his/her fingerprints. Details regarding the selected booths will be communicated shortly. It has also been notified that the general public should register as voters before the last date of nomination filing by contesting candidates.
