India is a democratic nation where every citizen possesses the fundamental right to vote. This right enables individuals to choose a leader who they believe can lead the nation, address the issues of the common people, and bring about progress and change, among other things. National Voters Day is a crucial aspect of India's democratic system, as the future of the country lies in the hands of the elected leaders. It is imperative that we choose the right leader, as this decision can affect the progress and growth of the country and its people.

National voter's day

The leader of the country is responsible for implementing important projects and initiatives. If the foundational systems are not developed correctly, it can lead to problems such as unfinished roads and issues with electricity connections. Therefore, we should encourage young people to participate and create a strong network that will ensure that future generations exercise their right to vote consistently.

History of National Voters' Day

The day was commemorated nationwide on 25th January 2011 to coincide with the anniversary of the founding of the Election Commission of India on 25th January 1950. The event emphasizes that exercising one's right to vote is crucial and seeks to raise awareness among the youth about the same. The primary goal of observing this day is to promote and facilitate the enrolment of new voters, with a focus on maximizing their participation.

A Law Ministry proposal, approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was implemented on the day when rallies were taking place on government campuses. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni, in PM Manmohan Singh's cabinet, informed the news reporters that new voters aged 18 and above were displaying a lack of interest in enrolling in electoral rolls. In some cases, their enrolment levels were as low as 20% to 25%.

It is worth noting that the minimum age for voting was previously 21 years but was reduced to 18 years in 1988. The 61st Amendment Bill of 1998 was responsible for lowering the minimum age for voting in India.
