The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led convincingly in the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, but infighting on how to approach government formation resulted in the collapse of the NDA and hence a political crisis.

29 June 2022, saw the resignation of Uddhav Thackeray after a section of Shiv Sena MLAs led by Eknath Shinde defected and formed an alliance with the BJP. Eknath Shinde became Chief Minister, with Devendra Fadnavis becoming Deputy Chief Minister.
