What is EPF Form 20? 

EPF Form 20 is a legal form that can be filed for the purpose of claiming the amount from the deceased EPF member's  (EPF) Employees' Provident Fund balance. After a member of the EPF dies, the savings in the provident fund will be released to a designated nominee. If there is no nominee, legal heirs or family members of that EPF member. Once the claimant has identified themselves and submitted EPF Form 20 to EPFO, they get access to the Employee's Provident Fund amount. Thus, EPF Form 20 is part of the death claim.

Who can use EPF Form 20?

The EPF Form 20 is used in case of an EPF member's death. It is not for customary withdrawals. Eligible individuals that can claim EPF benefits with this form are as follows:

  1. Nominee: Individual nominated by the EPF member.
  1. Legal Heir: The legal heir (as per succession law) if no nominee was nominated.
  1. Family Member: Spouse, children, or parents may also file a claim.
  1. Guardian: If the nominee or legal heir/ claimant is a minor, then a lawful guardian can file on behalf.

Attestation of EPF Form 20

EPF Form 20 is used to claim the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) amount in case of death of the member. This form is to be submitted to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) through the employer of the establishment in which the claimant was last employed.

The attestation of EPF form 20 must have the signature of both the employer and the claimant (nominee or legal heir) on each page. In case the employer is not available, or the company is closed, then the form must be attested by one of the following officials:

  1. A Magistrate
  1. A Gazetted Officer (a government officer from group-A or B)
  1. A Postmaster or Sub-Postmaster
  1. President of Village Union or
  1. President of the Village Panchayat (only where there exists no Union Board)
  1. Chairman, Secretary or Member of a Municipal or District Local Board
  1. A Member of Parliament (MP) or State Legislative Assembly (MLA)
  1. A Member of the Central Board of Trustees or the Regional Committee of EPF
  1. The Manager of the bank in which the claimant has his/her savings bank account
  1. Head of a recognised educational institution

Documents Required with EPF Form 20

To process the claim without any hindrance you will need to attach the following supporting documents:

  1. Death Certificate of the EPF member- All claimants whether nominees or legal heirs will need to include this.
  1. Guardianship Certificate- To be submitted where a minor claim is made by someone other than the natural guardian.
  1. Cancelled Cheque- This is needed to ensure that the funds are deposited in the correct bank account through ECS (Electronic Clearing Service).
  1. EPF Form 5 IF- This is needed to claim the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) benefits in case the member died while in service.
  1. EPF Form 10D- To claim pension benefits like a widow pension, children pension, orphan pension
  1. EPF Form 10C- This is needed if the member has died after attaining 58 years of age but had less than 10 years of service. This will allow you to withdraw your pension. 

Steps for filling and submitting EPF Form 20

The EPF Form 20 is used by the nominee, legal heir, or guardian of a deceased member of the EPF to withdraw the Provident Fund balance. Please follow these steps to fill in and submit the form correctly.

Step 1: Download the Form

Go to the EPFO website and download EPF Form 20. It is also available in printed form from your last employer or the regional EPFO office.

Step 2: Collect Documents

You will need the death certificate, the cancelled cheque of the claimant’s bank account details, and other relevant related forms including Form 5IF, Form 10D and Form 10C depending upon the claim that you plan to submit.

Step 3: Fill Member details

Provide the full name of the deceased member, name of the deceased individual's father or husband, details of the last employer, EPF account number, the date the member left service, the reason for leaving (enter ‘Death’), the date of death, and marital status (widowed or unmarried) for the deceased at time of their death.

Step 4: Fill Claimant Details

In this section, provide details of the claimant's full name, gender, age, marital status, and the relationship of the claimant to the deceased member. If the claim is to be completed as a guardian, the guardian's name and details should be included along with the full postal address in block letters.

Step 5: Select Mode of Payment

From the above options, please select electronic fund transfer (ECS) as the preferred method of repayment, by attaching the cancelled cheque for quicker and safer payment.

Step 6: Sign and Get Attested

Both the claimant and the employer must sign every page of the form. If the employer is unavailable, the form must be attested by an authorised official such as a magistrate, gazetted officer, bank manager, or village panchayat president.

Step 7: Submit the Form

  1. Submit the completed and signed form along with supporting documents to your employer for forwarding to EPFO. If the employer is unavailable, submit it directly to the regional EPFO office with the required attestation.

Step 8: Track Your Claim

Make sure to provide your mobile number on the form. You will receive SMS alerts about your claim status and can also track it online via the EPFO portal.

Points to Remember While Filling the Form

  1. Always write in BLOCK LETTERS while filling in the form so that it is legible.
  1. Provide your mobile number so that you can get SMS alerts on your claim status at different times.
  1. Provide a cancelled cheque of the bank account in which you want the funds to be deposited.
  1. Provide the address in full to ensure that it is received using the correct PIN code.

  • Who can fill EPF Form 20 after a member's death?

    EPF Form 20 can be filled in by a family member, legal heir, or nominee after a member's death. If the nominee is a child, or physically or mentally unwell, a guardian can apply on behalf of the child or the physically or mentally unsound person. The guardian must fill out EPF Form 20 and attach the required documents, and through the employer or an officer duly authorized. 

  • Where do I submit EPF Form 20?

    You have to submit EPF Form 20 offline through the EPF office. Normally, the employer will submit the form to the EPF office. If the last employer has closed the business, the EPF Form 20 should be signed by a magistrate or a government officer and verified and then submitted, as instructed.

  • What are the docu­ments that need to accompany EPF Form 20?

    EPF Form 20 needs to be submitted with the death certificate and cancelled cheque. If a guardian (but not a parent) is submitting on behalf of a child, then a guardianship certificate needs to be submitted along. If you want to lodge a claim under insurance or pension schemes where, depending on the nature of the claim, you require to have forms 5IF, 10C and 10D.

    No, it is not possible to submit your EPF Form 20 online. All EPF Form 20 has to be filled in and submitted offline. You must print the EPF Form 20, then fill it in by hand and submit it to your last employer or an officer duly authorized. 

  • Why do we need EPF Form 20?

    We need to fill in the EPF Form 20 for any withdrawal of EPF money, in case a member has passed away, or if the member is a child or is mentally unwell. The money will be paid to the nominee or legal heir after verification or to the child or parent. 

  • What is the employer role in EPF Form 20 submission?

    The employer needs to check and sign the form, then send it to the EPFO Office. If the employer is not available, a magistrate or associated can only verify it. It is important that all pages are signed and stamped.

  • How many days does it take to complete EPF Form 20?
