Toyota recently cut prices on its Camry Hybrid model, following the government’s decision to reduce the VAT on electric and hybrid vehicles. The Camry Hybrid is Toyota’s most popular hybrid in India, with the company selling over 400 units since January 2016. This new price cut was possible due to a reduction in the VAT on hybrid vehicles, which has been reduced to 5% from 12.5%. Currently applicable only in Delhi-NCR, this cut has dropped prices by Rs 2.3 lakhs, putting the hybrid on par with the petrol model.
A petrol model of the Camry costs Rs 30.23 lakhs (ex-showroom), while the Hybrid will now cost Rs 30.9 lakh. This could lead to a drop in sales of the petrol Camry, which has seen a drop in demand in recent times, with under 50 units sold in 2016. The Hybrid Camry offers a host of advantages over the petrol version, with fuel efficiency being the primary one. While the Hybrid gives a mileage of 19 km/l, the petrol model churns out just around 8 km/l. Both these cars have a similar 2.5 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine, with the Hybrid modified to include a permanent magnet synchronous motor which doubles as a hybrid battery.
