After a committee meeting chaired by Expenditure Secretary AN Jha, a plan has been put in place to offer a direct subsidy up to Rs.1.4 lakh for electric vehicles. This subsidy would include all EVs including 2-wheelers, 4-wheelers, and 3-wheelers.
The panel also increased the amount allocated in subsidies from Rs.4,000 crore to Rs.5,000 for a 5-year period. This decision is contrary to the decision made earlier due to the financial burden that the government would incur.
According to the current plan, the government subsidy will be capped at 20% of the price of an EV. If this were to be implemented, consumers will be able to purchase EVs at a price Rs.1 lakh to Rs.1.4 lakh lower from local car manufacturers.
