Indian transport minister, Nitin Gadkari, has stated that from July 2019, all Indian cars must have dual airbags, seat belt reminders, and rear parking sensors as their standard safety fitments. Moreover, since the Indian version of NCAP is going to be implemented in the country, the car makers have to be careful with the quality of cars. The safety ratings of the cars sold in India should improve. Currently, around 50% of the Indian cars have NCAP rating below 2 and such cars are considered to be highly unsafe internationally. By the year 2022, the cars will also mandatorily have to install driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, high-speed warning, and lane assist. These measures will not only improve the safety ratings of the cars sold in India, but will also lower the number of accidents, fatalities, and other damages. As a flat GST rate of 12% will be charged on the electric vehicles and other cars driven by ethanol and CNG, it is likely to encourage the manufacturers to produce alternate fuel-driven cars in the country.
