The Ministry of Women and Child Development was created in 1985 as a department under the Ministry of Human Resource Development and became a separate ministry in 2006.
The first Cabinet-rank Minister for Women and Child Development was Mumtaz Begum (1985, as department head under HRD), later followed by independent ministers after 2006.
The ministry is responsible for policies, laws, and programs related to women empowerment, child welfare, nutrition, adoption, and protection against exploitation.
