Voter ID Chandigarh

India is considered the world’s biggest democracy. With over 8 crore eligible voters and more added each year, it is indeed one of the largest countries that elects its leaders in a democratic manner.

Voting is a right that has been bestowed on the citizens of India, which permits eligible citizens to choose their representative from among a pool of candidates under the principle of ‘one person, one vote’. This ensures that the country’s leaders stay accountable to the people and allows all citizens to participate in the selection of the country’s leadership.

Organising elections and aiding the electorate in the voting process is done by the Election Commission of India, which conducts elections and also oversees the registration of eligible citizens, as well as monitors the election process.

To ensure that elections at all levels are conducted in a free and fair manner, the Election Commission of India has set up State Election Commissions, who carry out the duties of the Election Commission at the state level.

Eligible voters who register are allotted voter ID cards, known as EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Cards).

  • Only 14 Transgender Voters Enrolled From Mohali District

Even after being officially recognized as the 3rd gender, many from the transgender community have not enrolled themselves for voting in Punjab. Only 14 of them registered from SAS Nagar district for the upcoming Punjab Elections. A total of 273 (approx.) people from the transgender community registered for voting in Punjab and it is estimated that in Mohali district alone, there are around 1,500 to 2,000 members in the community. In the state, there are more than 20,000 transgenders. It is seen that because of family pressure many transgenders either register themselves as male or female, or they do not change the existing status to 3rd gender.
