The Election Commission of India announced Assembly Election schedule for Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry on 15 March 2026. The terms of the legislative assemblies in these regions are set to end on different dates during May and June. The Assembly Election 2026 schedule is as follows:

  • Assam Assembly Elections 2026: The Assembly Election will be conducted in Assam on 9th April 2026 in a single phase.
  • Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: The Assembly Election will be conducted in Kerala on 9th April 2026 in a single phase.
  • Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026: The Assembly Election will be conducted in Tamil Nadu on 23rd April 2026 in a single phase.
  • Puducherry Assembly Elections 2026: The Assembly Election will be conducted in Puducherry on 9th April 2026 in a single phase.
  • West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026: The Assembly Election will be conducted in West Bengal in two phases. The first phase of the election will be conducted on 23rd April 2026, and the second phase of the election will be conducted on 29th April 2026.

Counting of votes for all these regions took place on 4th May 2026 (votes for all five states and the Union Territory were counted together on 4th May 2026). The BJP-led NDA won Assam for a third consecutive term; the Congress-led UDF won Kerala, with V. D. Satheesan as Chief Minister; Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won Tamil Nadu, with Vijay as Chief Minister; and the BJP won West Bengal for the first time, with Suvendu Adhikari as Chief Minister, as of July 2026.The NDA also retained Puducherry, with N. Rangasamy re-elected Chief Minister for a fifth term.

Delhi Assembly Elections 2025

The Delhi Assembly Elections were conducted in early 2025. The contest featured the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Indian National Congress (INC), among others. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a decisive majority in the Delhi Assembly elections, ending AAP's decade-long rule, with Rekha Gupta sworn in as Delhi's Chief Minister, as of July 2026.

The BJP increased its vote share and seat tally compared to the last assembly election. The INC continued to register minimal electoral impact in the region. Major issues raised during the campaign included governance, utility services, law and order, and public health infrastructure.

The results of this election provide data on voter preferences in an urban region that hosts central government institutions. The outcome also serves as a reference point for future electoral strategies by political parties active in metropolitan areas.

Bihar Assembly Elections 2025

The Bihar Assembly Elections were held in November 2025. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising the Janata Dal (United) and the Bharatiya Janata Party, won a landslide majority against the Mahagathbandhan, which included the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Indian National Congress, and other regional parties, and Nitish Kumar returned as Chief Minister.

Key electoral topics in Bihar include public infrastructure, welfare schemes, employment, law enforcement, and agricultural policy. The results of this election may affect party strategies at the national level in the run-up to 2029.

Local Body Elections 2025–2028

Between 2025 and 2028, various local body elections will be held across Indian states and Union Territories. These include urban municipal corporations and rural panchayat bodies. Among them, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election will be a major administrative event.

The BMC election was held on 15th January 2026, ending nearly four years of administrator rule after its last elected term expired in 2022; results were declared the following day. The corporation governs municipal services in Mumbai and manages a high-budget civic infrastructure. It has historically been led by the Shiv Sena. The party is now divided into two factions: one led by Uddhav Thackeray and the other by Eknath Shinde.

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won a majority in the BMC election, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party; BJP corporator Ritu Tawde was elected Mayor of Mumbai.

Outcomes of the BMC and other local elections will be reviewed for their influence on state-level performance, especially in Maharashtra. Voter behaviour in these polls may reflect preferences on issues such as urban service delivery, sanitation, housing, and local governance.

2029 General Elections

The next Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held in 2029. The composition of the central government for the 2029–2034 term will be determined by the outcome. Political parties will base their campaign strategies on data and performance trends from the 2025–2028 elections.

If the BJP performs well in the upcoming state and local elections, it may seek a continuation of its current policies and alliances. In the case of opposition gains, regional and national parties may collaborate through formal or informal coalitions.

Regional parties such as the Trinamool Congress, DMK, AAP, and others are expected to focus on increasing their representation in the Lok Sabha. Their performance in state elections will influence their bargaining position in post-election government formation.

Campaign priorities may include national security, economic indicators, environmental management, employment levels, digital infrastructure, and social sector expenditure. Electoral roll updates, changes in delimitation, and voter turnout patterns will be monitored by the Election Commission and other institutions.

Ahead of the 2029 General Elections, the Election Commission of India has been conducting a nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in phases across states and Union Territories, aimed at removing ineligible entries and ensuring every eligible citizen is enrolled as a voter.

FAQs on Upcoming Elections in India

1.What are the upcoming elections in India?

Upcoming elections in India include state assembly elections, local body polls, and the next Lok Sabha general election, each held on a schedule set by the Election Commission of India. These elections determine who governs at the state, municipal, and national levels. This page tracks the schedule and outcome of each major election as it is announced.

2.Why are state elections important in the cycle of upcoming elections in India?

State elections decide who governs individual states and Union Territories, covering matters like education, law enforcement, infrastructure, and welfare delivery. They also shape the composition of the Rajya Sabha, since its members are elected by state legislators. This makes state polls a key part of the broader elections in India.

3.How often are elections held in India?

Elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies in India are held every five years unless the government calls early polls or a state is placed under President's Rule. Local body elections follow similar five-year cycles that vary by state. This regular schedule is part of what keeps track of upcoming elections in India predictable for voters.

4.What role do state assembly elections play in national politics in India?

State assembly elections help parties test voter sentiment, refine campaign strategies, and build alliances ahead of national polls. Members elected to a state assembly also elect that state's representatives to the Rajya Sabha. This is why assembly elections are closely watched alongside other upcoming elections in India.

5.What are local body elections and how do they fit into upcoming elections in India?

Local body elections decide who governs municipal corporations, municipal councils, and panchayats, which manage services such as water supply, sanitation, and local infrastructure. They are held separately from state assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Their results offer an early signal of voter sentiment ahead of the state and national elections in India.

6.How are Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha seats distributed among Indian states?

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha seats are distributed among Indian states based on population and constitutional provisions, so larger states such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra hold more seats. Rajya Sabha members are elected indirectly by state legislators rather than by direct public vote. This distribution shapes how the results of upcoming elections in India affect Parliament.

7.What determines when an Indian state holds its next assembly election?

An Indian state holds its next assembly election when the five-year term of its sitting legislative assembly ends, unless the assembly is dissolved earlier. The Election Commission of India announces the exact schedule closer to the date. This term-based cycle is why upcoming elections in India are staggered across different years.

8.Who decides the schedule for upcoming elections in India?

The Election Commission of India, an independent constitutional body, decides and announces the schedule for all state assembly, local body, and Lok Sabha elections in India. It also enforces the Model Code of Conduct during the campaign period. This ensures every election is conducted under a uniform, impartial process.

9.What issues typically influence voters in India's state elections?

Voters in India's state elections are typically influenced by issues such as governance, employment, welfare delivery, infrastructure, and law and order, alongside state-specific concerns like regional identity or resource allocation. These priorities vary from state to state. Tracking these themes helps explain outcomes across the different elections in India each cycle covers.

10.How can voters stay informed about upcoming elections in India?

Voters can stay informed about upcoming elections in India by checking the Election Commission of India's official website for schedules, candidate lists, and voter list updates. The same site also provides details on voter registration and polling booth locations. Staying updated ensures voters can participate effectively when elections are announced.
