Note: Service Tax was replaced by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) effective 1 July 2017. Service Tax Numbers are no longer issued. Existing service providers must register under GST and obtain a GSTIN (GST Identification Number). If you are looking to register for GST, visit the GST portal at www.gst.gov.in. Just like any other government registration number, it is unique. You must hold a PAN Card to pay the income tax and file for income tax returns. In the same way, this Service Tax Number is mandatory when you pay and file for service tax returns.
Every service provider must apply for a service tax number if they provide/ sell services that cost more than INR 9 lacs per annum. But if it is less than INR 9 lacs, then you do not need to. Within one week after application, your service tax number will be provided. You can file this online as well.
What is the Format of Service Tax Number?
Service Tax Number is fashioned on the basis of your PAN Number, making it easier to link your tax records and other details. The format of this 15-digit number is specified below:
First 10 Digits | Your 10-digit PAN Number |
11th and 12th Digits | Code of the Service Tax, which is either SD or ST |
The last 3 digits | Serial Number for Service Tax Number issued for your PAN Card. |

Verification Process of Details Provided by the Service Tax Assessee
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC, formerly CBEC) now administers GST. To verify GST registration details, visit the GST portal at www.gst.gov.in and use the 'Search Taxpayer' feature by entering the GSTIN. All you need to do is to enter the Service Tax Number of the candidate where required. It is strongly recommended that you double check Service Tax Number printed on any Invoice you receive with CBEC records available online. This way you can prevent any kind of fraudulence as well as save your money.
