  • Harley-Davidson to Launch Small-Capacity Motorcycle in 250-500cc Space

Harley-Davidson - an American premium motorcycle manufacturer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin - has recently announced that it will venture the 250-500cc segment by launching a lower capacity bike. While the century-old company will be focusing on expanding its global footprint, it also intends to attract buyers in developing countries such as India. With plans towards future sustainability, the bike maker is looking to appeal global customers by launching a product in a restricted price range or in an unpursued space. While the LiveWire range by Harley-Davidson will take care of the demand for zero-emission motorcycles, the company is planning to introduce a new line of new streetfighters ranging from 500cc.

Mainstream manufacturers do not usually step out of their comfort zones to launch a wide range of future models. However, Harley-Davidson has done just that with an estimated total investment of more than Rs.5,600 crore ($825 million) till 2022 and beyond. The new 250-500cc range of motorcycles by the company is likely to go up against the Royal Enfield Classic 500 and Classic 350. With the rising demand for cruisers coupled with Harley-Davidson’s expertise developing lifestyle-based bikes, the new bike is likely to quickly gain popularity in the market. Furthermore, the new motorcycle with 250-500cc will be manufactured in association with an Indian partner. This will create a bridge between the small-capacity motorcycle and the regular products by Harley-Davidson which, in turn, will help with the sales growth and revenue of the company in the domestic market. This will also allow the company to export the 250-500cc bike elsewhere similar to the BMW and KTM low-capacity models. The bike is expected to sport a single-cylinder powertrain along with standard equipment such as ABS. Featuring the authentic styling of Harley Davidson, the bike might carry a slightly higher price tag than the entry-level Royal Enfield bikes.
