In an effort to boost the country’s digital movement, the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) in collaboration with Indian Banks Association and the Reserve Bank of India launched UPI AutoPay. This feature enables the user to transfer money using smartphone anywhere, anytime. This technological advancement was an effort to push the country in the direction of a cashless economy and also for the convenience of the buyers.

What is UPI AutoPay?

The UPI Automatic Payment feature is known as UPI AutoPay. It enables the user to schedule the fixed monthly payments like subscriptions, utility services, etc. The said amount will be automatically deducted from the user’s bank account on the date set by user and the payment will be made. This recurring payment facility allows the users to enjoy seamless payment experience and also enables them to save payment receipts. 

How Does UPI AutoPay Work?

Most of the UPI applications offer the user a ‘Mandate’ option. Using this option, the user can create, approve, modify, pause, or revoke the auto-debit mandate. The user needs to provide a one-time approval to the merchants for whom they want to automate payments on the platform, to make use of this feature. The user also needs to fill in other details such as payment amount, merchant details, subscription start date, payment frequency, etc.  

Make a note of the below mentioned points while option for UPI AutoPay: 

  1. Choose a subscription plan 
  2. Authenticate a transaction using a UPI PIN after checking all the details. (This is a one-time activity) 
  1. Pause or revoke the mandates at any point in time if required 
  2. Set mandates for recurring payments of weekly, monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, yearly or as-presented frequency. 

How to Set Up UPI AutoPay on Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm

Setting up UPI AutoPay on popular apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm is simple. Here’s a step-by-step process:

Google Pay

  • Open Google Pay and tap on the profile icon.
  • Select Autopay under the “Bills & Subscriptions” section.
  • Choose a service (e.g., OTT, utility) and enter mandate details.
  • Authenticate with UPI PIN to approve the AutoPay.

PhonePe

  • Launch PhonePe and go to the 'My Money' section.
  • Under Payment Settings, choose UPI AutoPay.
  • Select a subscription or biller and fill in frequency, amount, and validity.
  • Confirm using your UPI PIN.

Paytm

  • Open the Paytm app and navigate to UPI & Payments.
  • Tap on AutoPay Mandates.
  • Choose the desired service or merchant.

  • Authenticate with UPI PIN to complete the setup.

To Cancel a Mandate:

  • Open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm).
  • Go to the AutoPay section or Mandate dashboard.
  • Select the active mandate.
  • Click on ‘Cancel’ and confirm with your UPI PIN.

To Modify a Mandate:

  • Navigate to the mandate you wish to change.
  • Click ‘Modify’.
  • Change amount, frequency, or validity.
  • Re-authenticate using your UPI PIN to save changes.

Note: Not all parameters may be editable; in some cases, you may need to cancel and set up a new mandate.
