Covid Insurance Plans

The Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDA) has directed health insurance companies to provide coverage for Covid-19 cases under policies where hospitalisation is covered for illnesses. It has stated that all admissible expenses should be covered for coronavirus cases which includes the cost of treatment during the quarantine period. Such claims are to be expeditiously cleared as well. In response to this, some life insurance firms have launched exclusive policies for Covid-19 cases in India. Existing life insurance policies also cover Covid-19 cases.  

Here is a list of health insurance policies that cover treatment for Covid-19: 

Star Novel Coronavirus Health Insurance Policy 

This is a policy issued by Star Health Insurance for individuals who have contracted and been diagnosed with Covid-19, or Novel Coronavirus, and requiring hospitalisation. The report of a positive diagnosis and hospitalisation should be from a government-authorised centre in order to be eligible for the claim. 

  • Sum Insured: Rs.21,000 and Rs.42,000 on individual sum insured basis only 
  • Premium with tax: Rs.542 for Rs.21,000 sum insured and Rs.1083 for Rs.42,000 sum insured 
  • Pre-acceptance medical screening: None 
  • Waiting period: 16 days 
  • Payment: 100% lump-sum of sum insured 
  • Age: Between 18 to 65 years 
  • Dependents: Children between 3 months to 25 years along with one parent 

ICICI Lombard Health Insurance Covid-19 Protection Cover 

ICICI Lombard Health Insurance covers treatment expenses for Covid-19 related infections under existing health insurance policies and also under its special Covid-19 Protection Cover. Details are as given below: 

  • Sum insured is paid as a lump-sum benefit if there is a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 by government authorities 
  • Quarantine expenses are covered in authorised government facilities 
  • Dedicated helpline with a Health Assistance team for identifying hospitals and fixing appointments 
  • Ambulance assistance is provided unlimited times with transportation cost borne by the insured 
  • Policy period is for one year 
  • Eligible age between 18 to 75 years 
  • Initial waiting period of 14 days for new policies 
  • Overseas travel history after 31 December 2019 will exclude claims 
  • If the existing policy has Outpatient Treatment Cover, Covid-19 vaccination expenses will be covered, once such a vaccine is available 
  • Expenses of family members are covered if they are included in existing policy 

HDFC Ergo Health Insurance for Coronavirus Hospitalisation 

HDFC Ergo Health Insurance provides coverage for hospitalisation related to coronavirus infection under its existing health insurance plans. The details are as given below: 

  • Even if sum insured is exhausted, additional sum insured can be availed up to the base sum insured 
  • No capping of room rent 
  • Cashless facility for home treatments 
  • Expenses covered included pre-hospitalisation, post-hospitalisation, diagnostics, and consultation 

Care Health Insurance 

Care Health Insurance provides coverage for hospitalisation related to coronavirus treatments under its indemnity-based products. Some of these are:

  • Travel history or family history will not affect new policies 
  • 100% lump-sum of sum insured for confirmed cases 
  • 50% of sum insured for quarantine in case of suspected infection 
  • 10% of sum insured will be paid to quarantined individuals as additional benefit 

Edelweiss General Insurance 

Edelweiss General Insurance provides coverage for Covid-19 cases under its existing health insurance policies. The details are as given below: 

  • Hospitalisation expenses for Covid-19 treatment is covered without any waiting period 
  • Quarantine-related expenses at a government-approved facility is covered 
  • Travel history will have no impact on your claims 
  • Cashless hospitalisation is available in network hospitals

  • If an in-built OPD benefits exists, expenses for treatment at home will be reimbursed 

Aditya Birla Health Insurance 

Aditya Birla Health Insurance covers Covid-19 related treatment expenses under its indemnity-based health insurance plans. Details are as given below: 

  • Expenses for Covid-19 are covered according to terms and conditions of existing policies

Bharti Axa Group Health Assure (for DBS Bank Customers) 

Digibank by DBS offers coverage for Covid-19 treatment for its customers through a partnership with Bharti Axa General Insurance: Details are as given below 

  • 100% of sum insured provided in case of a positive Covid-19 diagnosis from authorised government centres 
  • 50% of sum insured provided for 14-day quarantine in government or military hospitals even if later found to be negative 
  • Sum insured ranging from Rs.25,000 to Rs.2 lakh 
  • Premiums starting at Rs.499 
  • Waiver of the 30-day waiting period 
  • Available for customers of DBS Bank between 18 and 75 years of age 
  • Individual sum insured policy valid for one year 
  • Policy is renewable for the duration of being a DBS Bank customer 

Digit Health Insurance 

The online insurance service provider Digit provides a coronavirus insurance plan that can be bought through its website or its partner programs. The details of the Digit Healthcare Plus Policy are as given below: 

  • This is a fixed-benefit individual health insurance policy 
  • Policy duration is for one year 
  • Available for individuals up to 75 years of age 
  • Sum insured from Rs.25,000 to Rs.2 lakh in multiples of Rs.25,000 
  • Premium starts at Rs.299 
  • 100% sum insured if coronavirus tested positive 
  • 50% sum insured for quarantine in a government or military hospital even if tested negative later 
  • Multiple individuals can be added under one policy with premium on a per-number basis and sum insured in multiples of Rs.25,000 
  • Initial waiting period of 15 days 
  • Travel history to certain countries since 1 December 2019 will not be considered eligible 

Arogya Sanjeevani 

This is a standard health insurance policy that is offered by all health insurance and general insurance companies in India. According to the IRDAI, it will also cover hospitalisation for Covid-19 treatments. The details are as given below: 

  • Pricing of the product is decided by each insurer 
  • Premium of Rs.1,000 for every Rs.1 lakh coverage 
  • Sum insured of up to Rs.5 lakh

  • Lump-sum benefit of up to Rs.25,000 
  • 100% sum insured if diagnosed positive or quarantined in government facilities 
  • 50% sum insured if diagnosed negative after 14 days of quarantine in government facilities

  • Premium of Rs.499, including taxes 

Group Hospital Cash: 

  • Daily fixed allowance from Rs.500 to Rs.1000 during hospitalisation for up to 10 days 
  • Enhanced ICU cash benefit 
  • Policy valid for one year 
  • Policies for individual name benefit only 

Corona Care by PhonePe and Bajaj Allianz  

An insurance policy that covers Covid-19 treatments has been launched by PhonePe in partnership with Bajaj Allianz General Insurance. The details are as given below: 

  • Sum insured of up to Rs.50,000 
  • Premium start at Rs.156 
  • Maximum age of entry for policy is 55 years 
  • Valid at any hospital that offers treatment for Covid-19 
  • One month of expenses for pre-hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation will also be covered 
  • No pre-screening medical tests required 
  • Can be bought online on the PhonePe app 
  • Instant disbursal of policy documents through the app
