There is no dearth of information regarding what the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is and what the precautions are against contracting it. There are also daily updates on the extent of the spread on a global scale. Here we provide in-depth information on testing, including who gets tested, what kind of tests are conducted, and a state-wise database of government and private labs that are conducting COVID-19 tests.
Coronavirus is spread through droplets generated by coughing or sneezing by an infected person. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has provided specific guidelines for testing COVID-19.

Based on the objective to contain the COVID-19 infection, the ICMR guidelines for COVID-19 testing has been revised thrice till date. The revised strategy on who will get tested as of 20 March 2020 are as follows:
Direct and high risk contacts refer to those living in the same household as a patient who has tested positive for the virus and healthcare workers who treated the patient without suitable protection recommended by WHO (World Health Organization). All those who test positive, will be isolated and treated under the standard protocol.
Currently, testing is being done free of charge for all individuals who require to be tested as per the guidelines.
For others, the cost for the first step screening analysis is Rs.1,500 and the additional analysis for confirmation is Rs.3,000.
In order to better understand the epidemiology of COVID-19 in India, ICMR will soon start serological testing.
A serological test typically looks for antibodies present in your blood. It is different from a diagnostic test in that it does not determine active infection through swabs. It will help determine if a person was previously exposed to COVID-19 (asymptomatic persons) by the presence of antibodies.
According to Randeep Guleria, Chairman of the high-level expert committee formed to review the testing strategy for Covid-19 by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), serological tests will help generate data and understand whether people have been exposed to the virus.
At present, random samples are being tested to determine community transmission. Serological tests are believed to further aid researchers to identify and trace people, as well as understand the behaviour of the virus. ICMR is presently contemplating using this test on people who come in contact with COVID-19 patients. An antibody kit will be used to perform this test. ICMR invited bids for the same on 25 March 2020. ICMR estimates the need for 1 million such testing kits for the country.
