How are Petrol Rates in Ladakh Calculated? 

The prices of petrol in any state is formed by the following cost elements: 

• Crude Oil Price: This is the base price of raw oil purchased from international markets. India imports over 80% of its crude oil, making this a significant factor. 

• Refinery and Freight Costs: The cost of refining crude oil into petrol and transporting it to various parts of the country. 

• Dealer's Commission: A commission paid to the fuel pump owners. 

• Central Excise Duty: A tax levied by the central government, which is a fixed amount. 

• State Value Added Tax: A tax imposed by the state government, which varies from state to state. 

• Exchange Rate: Since crude oil is traded in US dollars, the rupee to dollar exchange rate affects the import cost. 

Dynamic Pricing Model 

Since June 2017, India has followed a dynamic fuel pricing model. This means that petrol and diesel prices are revised daily at 6 a.m. This system replaced the earlier practice of revising prices every fortnight. The daily revision helps to align the domestic fuel prices with the fluctuations in international crude oil prices and currency exchange rates.
