Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme for Working Women - Overview

The Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme for Working Women was launched by the Government of Tamil Nadu with the main aim of improving the mobility of working women across the state.

By availing the benefits of the scheme, working women in the state will be provided financial assistance to purchase a gearless two-wheeler to commute to work. However, the eligibility criteria must be met and the relevant documents should be submitted to avail the benefits of the scheme.

Objective of the Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme for Working Women

The scheme’s main objective is to provide working women a two-wheeler to travel to work. The focus of the scheme is to provide women-friendly two-wheelers (gearless or auto-geared) to ensure ease of use. 

For women with disabilities, retrofitted three-wheeler scooters are provided. The engine capacity of the two-wheeler can be up to 125 cc.

Subsidy Amount

A maximum of 50% of the vehicle's cost or Rs.25,000, whichever amount is less, is provided as a subsidy.

Mode of Payment

The subsidy amount is directly credited to the beneficiary's bank account to ensure accountability and transparency.

Balance Amount

The beneficiary is responsible for the remaining cost, which can be covered through personal funds or by availing loans from banks or Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs).

Additional Benefit for Differently-Abled

Differently-abled women are eligible for an additional assistance amount, often leading to a higher total subsidy for retro-fitted three-wheelers.

Around 1 lakh women are likely to avail the benefits of the scheme every year.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria that must be met to avail the benefits of the scheme are mentioned in the table below:  

Residency 

You must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu. 

Age Limit 

You must be between the ages 18 years and 40 years. 

Annual Income 

The annual income must be below Rs.2.5 lakh. 

License 

Must have a valid two-wheeler Driving License (DL). 

Limit 

Only one woman is eligible to avail the scheme per family. 

Vehicle Specification 

The two-wheeler must be new, gearless, and with an engine capacity not more than 125cc. 

Certificate 

Community Certificate must be provided for individuals under SC/ST category. 

Application Process

You can apply for the scheme offline and the process is mentioned below:

  • The application form can be downloaded from the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women’s official website. You can also collect the application form from Block Offices, Urban Local Body Offices, or the Collectorate for free.
  • The application form and the necessary documents must be submitted to the respective Block Offices (for rural) or Urban Local Body Offices (for urban).
  • Next, the verification process will be completed.
  • Once the application is approved, the beneficiary purchases the two-wheeler.
  • Once the Subsidy Claim Form, the vehicle's Registration Certificate (RC), and the driving license, the subsidy amount is released.

    No, the subsidy is a reimbursement and you must first buy the vehicle and register it.

  3. I only have a Learner's Licence (LLR). Am I eligible?

    Yes, you can apply with an LLR. However, you must obtain a valid two-wheeler driving license before submitting the final Subsidy Claim Form.

  4. My family already owns a motorcycle. Can I still apply?

    Yes, the scheme focuses on empowering the individual working woman. However, only one woman per family is eligible for the benefit.
