How to Make a Car Insurance Claim?

The process for making a claim depends on the type of claim being made. You can make a claim under two categories.

  1. Accidental damage to the vehicle
  2. Liability claim/Third-party claim

Claim in Case of Accidental damage to the vehicle

  1. Inform the nearest New India Assurance office. You will receive a claim form. 
  1. Fill up the form and submit it. 
  1. You will need to provide the following documents: 
  1. Driving license of the person who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. 
  1. Registration Certificate 
  1. Estimate of repairs 
  1. The vehicle will then be surveyed by an authorised surveyor who has been appointed by New India Assurance. 
  1. The surveyor will submit his report to New India Assurance. 
  1. The vehicle will be moved to the network garage for repairs. In case the vehicle has been damaged to the point it cannot be moved, a spot survey will be arranged where the surveyor will visit the site of the accident. 
  1. The claim will be directly settled with the Network garage. If it is a reimbursement claim, the claim amount will be reimbursed after the repairs. after repairs Cash memos and final bills will have to be signed and submitted. 

Claim in Case of Liability

In case you are liable to pay a third party in the event of damages or injury caused by your vehicle, you can follow this process.

  1. Inform New India Assurance immediately of the incident.
  2. Please note that, you should inform the company if any incident occurs wherein a liability claim can be made.
  3. The insurance company will forward the case to the Motor Act Claims Tribunal 
  4. When you receive a summons from the court, you should send the same to the insurance company.
  5. You will need to submit the following documents:
    1. Claim Form
    2. Copies of Registration Certificate
    3. Driving License
    4. FIR

New India Assurance Car Insurance Coverage

Your eligibility to make a claim will depend on the policy you have chosen, liability only or package policy. Before you make a claim for insurance, it is important to know if the damage or theft is covered in your policy. Policyholders can make a claim in the following cases.

Liability Only policies

  1. Damage to third party property.
  2. Death or bodily injury to a third party person.

Package Policy

  1. Damage to third party property
  2. Death or bodily injury to a third party person
  3. Earthquake (Fire and Shock) Damage
  4. Flood, Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest, Storm, Cyclone, Inundation, and Hailstorm
  5. Accidental external means
  6. By landslide/Rockslide
  7. Fire, self-ignition, explosion, or lightning
  8. Strike and Riot
  9. Burglary, housebreaking or theft
  10. Terrorist Act
  11. Malicious Act
  12. Whilst in transit by road, lift, elevator, inland waterway or air

In addition to the above, the policy will also cover towing charges up to Rs. 1,500 for four wheeler vehicles.

Add on coverage

You can also opt for add ons by paying a higher premium.

Add on covers include:

  1. Personal accident cover under private car policies for:
    1. Passengers
    2. Paid driver
  2. Loss or damage to accessories fitted in the vehicle such as air-conditioners, fans, stereos, etc.
  3. Legal liability to non-fare paying passengers in commercial vehicles.
  4. Legal liability to employees.

Exclusions of the New India Assurance Car Insurance Claim Process

You cannot make a claim for insurance in the following cases. In the event that you do file for insurance, the company has the legal right to reject your claim. 

  1. Loss when driving with an invalid driving license. 
  1. Loss when driving under the influence of alcohol. 
  1. Wear and tear 
  1. Mechanical and electrical breakdowns 
  1. Consequential loss 
  1. Claims arising out of contractual liability. 
  1. Loss due to war, civil war, mutiny, rebellion, invasion, etc. 
  1. Use of vehicle not complying with "limitations of use". For example, using a private passenger car as a taxi. 
  1. Any damage caused outside the specified geographical area. 
  1. Gross negligence on the part of the owner or driver can also be considered in case of theft or damage to the vehicle. 

GST Update: GST of 18% is applicable on car insurance effective from the 1st of July, 2017
