Mission Indradhanush is a health scheme launched by the Indian government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. By 2020, Mission Indradhanush will cover all children who have been partially or fully immunised against vaccine-preventable diseases.
It is an expansion of India's Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP), which provides free immunisations to 26 million children annually against 12 deadly diseases.
Mission Indradhanush aims to deliver comprehensive immunisation to pregnant women and infants under the age of two. According to government sources, more than 200 high-priority districts in 28 states had the largest concentration of children who had never been immunised or were not fully immunised. During the first two phases of Mission Indradhanush, full immunisation coverage increased from 1% per year to 6.7% per year. Mission Indradhanush was carried out in four phases until 2017.

For the first time, IMI has reached 50% coverage of children up to five years old with essential vaccinations. This achievement marks a substantial advancement in India's efforts to improve immunization rates, particularly among vulnerable populations. The milestone underscores the effectiveness of IMI's intensified approach, which focuses on targeted vaccination campaigns, outreach to hard-to-reach areas, and enhanced monitoring and coordination. The success of IMI in reaching this milestone highlights the importance of continued investment in immunization programs to protect the health and well-being of children across the country.
