Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a Health Scheme that was introduced on 12 April 2005 for the safety and welfare of pregnant women. Launched under the National Health Mission, the objective of this scheme is to lower neonatal and maternal mortality among underprivileged pregnant women by encouraging institutional deliveries. JSY is now being implemented in all states and union territories primarily focusing on Low Performing States (LPS).

Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) has been identified by the JSY as an effective interface between pregnant women and the government. This scheme is sponsored by the central government and it combines monetary support with prenatal and postnatal care.

How to Apply for Janani Suraksha Yojana?

The registration process for Janani Suraksha Yojana is mentioned below: 

Step 1: Visit the official website of Janani Suraksha Yojana.  

Step 2: To obtain the e-registration form, click on the ‘Apply Online’ option. If you wish to register offline, you can download the form by clicking on the ‘Download Offline Form’ link and choosing your preferred language. You can avail the form in English and other regional languages.  

Step 3: Enter all the requested details such as the applicant's name, gender, date of birth, address, etc.  

Step 4: Enter the bank details and attach the necessary documents as proof of the specified personal information. 

Step 5: To submit your form online, click on the 'Submit' button. 

Step 6: You will receive a code that must be kept for future use.  

The authorities will verify your information and issue a JSY card via post or ASHA workers. For offline submission, you need to obtain a printout of the application form. You must submit the duly filled form along with relevant documents to an Anganwadi/ASHA centre.  

Eligibility Criteria to Obtain Monetary Benefit: 

The eligibility criteria to avail monetary benefits under JSY are as follows: 

  1. Low Performing States: All pregnant women giving birth at government health centres like Sub Centers (SCs)/CHCs/general wards of district and state hospitals/PHCs or FRUs are eligible to avail cash assistance.  
  2. High Performing States: JSY offers cash assistance to women belonging to BPL/Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) categories who want to deliver at government health centres like SCs/CHCs/general wards of district or state hospitals/PHCs or FRUs.  
  1. Low Performing States and High Performing States: SC/ST/BPL women can avail cash assistance if they deliver in an accredited private facility.

To apply for Janani Suraksha Yojana, you will require the following documents:

  2. Ration card (in case of BPL)

Features and Benefits of Janani Suraksha Yojana:  

Some of the features and benefits of Janani Suraksha Yojana are as follows: 

  1. States with low institutional delivery rates such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, etc., are provided with special dispensation. Such states are referred to as Low Performing States (LPS), whereas the other states are referred to as High Performing States (HPS). 
  2. All beneficiaries must have a JSY card in addition to a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) card. The Anganwadi worker (AWW), ASHA, or any other recognised link worker must create a micro-birth plan while working under the general supervision of the Medical Officer (MO) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM).  
  3. While compensation will be offered to mothers, JSY does not offer an ASHA package to pregnant women who choose to give birth in an accredited private facility. 
  1. Below Poverty Line (BPL) women aged 19 years and above who prefer to deliver at home in LPS and HPS are eligible for monetary support of Rs.500 for each delivery. This financial assistance will be offered only up to deliveries. The amount will be disbursed by the ANM/ASHA/any other link worker during the delivery or approximately seven days before the delivery. 
  2. Emergency obstetric services are usually offered for free by Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), or First Referral Units (FRUs). In case government specialists are unavailable to handle caesarean section deliveries or any other complications, cash benefits of up to Rs.1,500 for each delivery are provided to hire private-sector specialists.

However, in case the ASHA is not able to arrange a transport facility, transportation support must be provided in the health centre immediately upon the arrival of a pregnant woman. The ASHA/MO/PHC/ANM should all take necessary measures to make sure that the amount is paid to the beneficiary on time.
