How to Reduce Noise in Diesel Cars?

2. Old pulley bearings - When considering both the engine and the complete vehicle, pulleys rank among the fastest moving components. With the pulleys rotating quickly, even little pulley damage can become more noticeable. This damage can then directly affect the bearing, leading to whining noise generation. 

3. Worn-out driver belt - One of the most frequent causes of the noise the engine makes is this. Drive belts composed of rubber, including fan and timing belts, lose their flexibility and structure over time, mostly manifesting as the growth of cracks or an increase in length. The best option is to replace the concerned belt because this wear and tear also results in a constant noise. 

4. Old belt-tensioners - For the engine's fan belt, modern cars include automatic belt tensioners. These internal bearings or the belt tensioners themselves will eventually wear out. As a result, there is a noticeable whine, which can be fixed by having these belt tensioners examined or by replacing them together with the bearings.

How to Make Car Engine Less Noisy? 

Below mentioned are a few ways you can make your car engine less noisy - 

1. Additives - Oil Additive works on making your car less noisy by covering the moving parts with a very smooth layer that will, to some extent, minimise friction and noise. Two such additives that function well with diesel vehicles are STP oil additive and Nulon.  For one treatment, they will cost between Rs.400 and Rs.600 per can. 

2. Synthetic oil - The best answer to this issue is synthetic oil because it has richer lubricating molecules, provides better coating for the moving parts, and minimises friction as well. Less friction results in a quieter engine and improved performance. However, this remedy won't be inexpensive because synthetic oil costs about three to four times as much as conventional mineral oil. You can also try semi-synthetic oil if you wish to cut costs. 

3. Underbody coating – In a limited way, underbody coating also contributes to noise reduction. In addition to preventing rust and damage from stones striking the undercarriage of the car, thick underbody covering of 100–150 microns also lessens road noise and some engine noise that can be heard within the cabin. Depending on the car, good underbody coating from firms like 3M costs between Rs.3,500 and Rs.5,500. 

4. Padding - Use of dampening material in all locations that can be heard is one of the best techniques to reduce diesel engine noise. There are several quite pricey, but highly sound-absorbing, brands like Dynamat. Each sheet of 1 sq m of Dynamat costs roughly Rs.2,500. Using polyurethane yoga mats, which are frequently found in hardware stores, is a less expensive but less effective solution.  

5. Engine cover/shield - If your car lacks an engine cover or shield over the engine, you can have one made out of lightweight aluminium, with sound-absorbing material padded underneath and a reflective sheet above it (to lessen heat buildup). Add some padding to your engine shield if you already have one.
