  • Ways To Reduce Noise In Diesel Cars

    Cars that are powered by diesel engines have a number of advantages when it comes to power delivery, torque production, or even maintenance. But one major drawback of diesel engines is the noise. Diesel engines tend to make a lot of noise and thus makes the buyers uncomfortable at times. Even some of the most refined diesel engines can make a lot of noise when compared to a petrol engine. In fact, they can be noisier than their not-so-refined petrol-run counterparts.

    Why Are Diesel Engines Noisy?

    There are a number of reasons which make a diesel engine noisy. The major reasons can be summed up as follows:

    1. Diesel engines make a lot of noise while burning the fuel. The main reason behind this is that diesel molecules are much bigger than petrol molecules and the engines run on high compression.
    2. Another prominent reason behind the excessive noise in diesel engines is the fact that diesel engines do not use spark ignition. The heat which is generated during compression leads to self ignition of the fuel. Thus, clattering noises are produced.

    What Can You Do To Reduce The Noise That Your Diesel Car Makes?

    Although you cannot get rid of the noise completely, you can adapt certain noise reduction methods to reduce the noise of you car’s diesel engine by almost 10 decibel to 15 decibel. These noise reduction methods are discussed below:

    • Use synthetic engine oil: The usage of a synthetic engine oil over regular mineral oil can show significant improvement. Although synthetic oils are quite expensive, if compared to regular engine oils, they are worthy. Synthetic engine oils offer better lubrication. Certain synthetic oils also contain PTFE (Teflon) which makes a protective coating over all the moving parts. This helps in reduction of friction and noise. It also helps boost the overall performance of the engine.
    • Use additives: If synthetic oil seems to be too expensive, you can opt for a cheaper, oil-based additive. Adding an oil-based additive to your vehicle will result in a similar coating on all the moving parts in the engine. This will, in turn, decrease the friction and thus the noise will be toned down.
    • Use sound damping material: Perhaps, this is one of the most effective methods to reduce cabin noise in diesel engined cars. The idea is to use damping materials that can absorb sound, in all the comprehensive areas. These areas include the underside of bonnet, behind the firewall - between the engine bay and the cabin, and sides of the engine bay. For better results, the damping material can be pasted on the floor and inside the door pads as well. If done correctly, the usage of sound damping materials can bring down the noise inside the cabin.
    • Engine shield or engine cover: If your car does not have an engine cover or engine shield you can get a cover made out of light-weight aluminium. It is recommended to install a sound damping material on the underside and use a reflective sheet as a covering. The damping material will help in cutting down noise, while the reflective shield will help in reduction of heat build up. In case your car already has an engine cover or shield, you can consider making it soundproof by adding a layer of sound damping material.
    • Installing underbody covering: A 100-150 micron thick underbody coating can reduce the noise from the road and reduce the engine noise to some extent as well. Not only that, an underbody covering also prevents rust-formation and other physical damages caused by scraping on speed breakers or stones.

    The diesel engines are built in a way which is bound to be noisier than usual petrol engines. But, you can refer to the above mentioned noise reduction methods to make your diesel engined car quieter to some extent.
