Thrissur District Co-Operative Bank started functioning in 1918. It was set up as the apex bank of the former Cochin state having 39 affiliated societies and a paid up capital of Rs.2795/- only. The banks first president and secretary were Manakulam Kunjunni Raja and V.K Varkey. The bank started extending finance to individuals only in 1978. Until then, it had extended finance only through primary co-operatives.
