With the advent of electronic payment distribution, the world of banking has been simplified for many of us, particularly those who have an aversion to long queues and endless waiting. Reserve Bank of India has introduced two very significant ways of electronic fund transfer, namely- NEFT (National Electronic Fund Transfer) and RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement). Using this innovative technology of electronic money transfer, you can make payment settlements from the comfort of your home.

RBI deems it necessary that prior to requesting for a NEFT/RTGS transaction, you must know some very important details of the bank- both sender and recipient bank. Apart from other basic details, one of the most important pre-requisites is the IFSC code, which aids in identification of the banks participating in the online transaction.

An IFSC code serves as a unique identification for all the banks within the NEFT system. Without an IFSC code, a bank cannot enter an electronic money transfer. Comprising of 11 characters, a mix of numbers and alphabets, an IFSC code can be broken down into 3 parts. The first part, which is 4 alphabets, is the name of the bank; the second part is a numeric zero (0) and the third part is either numeric or alphanumeric and is 6 character long. The third part is the unique identification for the particular branch.

Example: If you are looking for an IFSC code of the Rajkot branch of the Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank. You will find it out to be- RNSB0000001. If you look closely, the RNSBin the code is short for Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank, the 5th character being zero by default, left for future use and the last 6 characters 000001 representing Rajkot branch of the Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank of Rajkot district in Gujarat.
