Internet has revolutionized the banking world by enabling innumerable services that you can avail right from your living room. One of the most noted features of internet banking is electronic fund transfer. Gone are the days of standing in queues, time-taking payment settlements, be it cash or through cheque. Through electronic banking services, you can send funds to anyone, anywhere in the country, without even having to visit your bank. Amongst many other banks, the Mehsana Urban Co-operative Bank is one to offer electronic payments to their customers.
The Reserve Bank of India introduced two modes of electronic fund transfer namely, National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS). NEFT and RTGS channels of money transfer are safe, secure and authentic, apart from being speedy. Both these systems use a special code called the Indian Financial System Code (IFSC), in order to successfully make a transaction. RBI grants IFSC codes to all banks that are enabled with NEFT/RTGS. Fund transfers can be made to another account not just of the Mehsana Urban Co-op Bank, but also any other bank account.
An IFSC code assigned as a unique identity to all banks by the RBI is made of 11 characters. The code is a combination of alphabets and numbers. The identity of the specific branch of any bank account is established by the first 4 characters, which denote the bank’s name and the last 6 characters, which identifies the branch. The 5th character in between is by default zero (0) and is left for future use.
For instance, MSNU0000005 is the IFSC code of CG road branch of the Mehsana Urban Co-operative Bank in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It can be broken into parts to explain how it is deciphered by the RBI. In this case,
