The way we transfer money online has changed with the introduction of NEFT (National Electronic Fund Transfer) and RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) facilities. Thanks to these services, we no longer need to endure long queues at bank branches to facilitate a money transfer within the country. Instead, customers can make online fund transfers wherever they are and be assured of a safe and quick process. An initiative by Reserve Bank of India (RBI), these services were started to facilitate a quick channel for online fund transfers. Customers of KSC Apex Bank who use these services to transfer funds will have to enter the recipient’s branch IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) code. This code is issued by RBI to every bank branch that is part of the NEFT network, and is used to identify the source and destination banks in a transaction. It also serves to help RBI regulate the fund transfers in the country.
The IFSC code is a set of 11 alphanumeric characters. Each IFSC code is made up of the bank name, the branch number and the number “0” in between the two. An IFSC code for the KSC Apex Bank branch in Koramangala, Bangalore district, Karnataka is KSCB0001028. The first four characters “KSCB” stands for the Karnataka State Co-operative Bank, “0” is the fifth character that is left blank for later use and “001028” is the branch number.
Looking for the IFSC and MICR codes of a particular bank branch is a very simple process. One could go to the bank webpage and find a list of all the bank branches that are registered on the NEFT network. You could find the IFSC code printed on the cheque leaves issued by a particular bank branch.
